He That Would Be Greatest Among You
Let Him Be The Servant Of All
Uranda November 19, 1950
The gently falling snow this morning has turned the earth white, obliterated the rough places from vision and given the earth a new aspect, a new appearance. With that falling snow there is moisture that penetrates the earth. The illustration, “White as snow,” has been used to illustrate the cleansing Power of the Spirit of the Living Christ. The Life Force of God, that cleansing purification by which we may be white as snow, so that out of the abundance of our hearts the things of God may appear on earth, is and should be the primary concern of each one.
We have considered something of those patterns of outworking by which we have been able to move forward to this point, and there has been some clearing of vision and deepening of realization, some purifying of hearts, so that you may more readily see the things of God. The perversity of human nature which causes human beings to become critical and non-responsive toward those who are leading the Way is something that we will have to contend with as we let the ministry of this Service expand out into the earth, but such things have no place here. Those upon whom the primary stress of holding the line, of maintaining a point of control, has rested have enough to do when conditions are of the best.
I have not been concerned about trying to make people perfect now according to some concept of what ultimate, absolute perfection might be. I have not held any of you up as being perfect, in the absolute sense. When we pause to consider this matter each one might well ask himself or herself the questions: To what degree have I given support to those who are holding the line? To what degree, through reaction and non-response, have I added unnecessarily to the burden?
Those who are leading the Way are expected to hold the line regardless of what takes place, but it seems to me that no personal satisfaction can come from an attitude which, carried to its ultimate extreme, might be expressed something like this: “I am proud of those leaders; see how they have come through. I have done everything I could to make it hard, and see, they have won the victory in spite of all I could do to hinder.” That is not the way to gain personal satisfaction.
I have talked a good deal about self-centeredness and pointed out that all forms of evil and destruction spring from self-centeredness. In the Spirit of the Living Christ we find that which moves toward a spirit of unification, the establishment of harmony and coordination, something that is selfless. “God is the giver of every good and perfect gift.” It is the nature of God to give. Now, if it is the nature of God to give, and if the true expression of service is selfless, the spirit of self-aggrandizement is eliminated, cleansed away, and each one shares a joy in the fulfilment that comes to others. That givingness which allows a true spirit of satisfaction in seeing the progress of others, and in knowing that the spirit and attitude of one's own expression has lent something to that manifestation of progress, establishes that frame of mind, that nature of the heart, which allows the manifestation of greatness of service within oneself.
The Master said, “He that would be greatest among you, let him be the servant of all.” The more we help others, the more our attitude consistently encourages and builds, the more we share in that fundamental nature of God on earth. If each one is trying to get some certain thing, trying to achieve some certain thing, to obtain recognition, to establish a state of consciousness in others wherein one may be somewhat magnified, there is a fundamental condition within the individual which prevents any true expression of the Spirit of the Living Christ.
We cannot look upon any certain individual anywhere at any time and say, “There is the individual who will fill such and such a place,” because to arbitrarily put someone somewhere in the sense of expecting that individual to arbitrarily fill that position would be attempting to build according to the concepts of man, the development of human organizations. We are building according to the patterns of the Cosmic Plan and the way is the Way of God. Place with respect to the individual is established when that which will fill the place finds consistent manifestation through the individual, and not before. That which finds consistent manifestation through the individual determines what placement, if any, there shall be, but we cannot at any time just appoint someone to a place. I did not arbitrarily, from some outer standpoint, appoint Martin Cecil to any place. He is in his place because he allowed a consistent expression of Reality to appear in manifestation on earth which allowed focus in that place where he is.
The only thing that counts, that has any weight, meaning or value in any way, shape or form on earth is what manifests through you now. Nothing else counts. That is all that we can count on; that is all that has any meaning in relationship to the thing that is developing here. What form of manifestation your God Being may have had at some past time means nothing—absolutely nothing. What the identity of your God Being is, is absolutely beside the point, something you do not need to know and it would not matter the snap of your finger if you did know. The only thing that has any value at all is what is here on earth in form—consistent expression that can be depended upon—that is all. Everything else is nothing as far as we are concerned out here. The inner God Being—oh yes, that is all right in the Inner Realms, but the Inner Realms have no meaning out here except as we let them, and the unreality that manifests through the individual is nothing. So, what is there? Only that which consistently manifests from the One Source, that comes into outer form and can be used here on earth—only that.
There have been so many foolish, ridiculous ideas come into manifestation within the range of our own Service about the value or importance of an individual because he or she supposed that his or her God Being was such and such. I do not give a snap of my finger what the identity of your God Being is, or what manifestations that God Being had in the past. It has no weight, meaning or value whatsoever in relationship to that which we are doing. The only thing that has any value is what you let come into manifestation in consistent outer form. That which so comes forth is that which can be used in the development of the Cosmic Plan. That which so comes forth is that which determines what place, if any, you shall have in the Pattern as it now manifests, and the place that you may have does not necessarily guarantee or say that it is the place you will always have, because others will come into the Pattern, and if you are growing there will be an increase, and there will be perhaps some other place that is best for you then and at that time.
Any time the human mind tries to get these things fixed on some arbitrary basis, to know exactly what and where, growth stops; and the outer mind self-activity may be carried on to the point where there is an elimination from the Body—an elimination, not of something worthwhile, but of refuse. Of refuse—why? Because there is no assimilation. That which is actually digested and assimilated becomes a part of the body but that which does not so blend in and with the body sooner or later becomes refuse: instead of giving primary thought to being a servant to all, there is a good deal of concern about being served. That is the way to become the least of all, not the greatest of all.
“He who would be great among you, let him be the servant of all.” The attitude involved in such service conditions one to the Patterns of God and opens one, so that the Currents of God can come forth—and from whence does any greatness spring? It springs from God and not from the human self. The human mind, the human form, the human talents and abilities, in and of themselves are nothing. They have a potential in relationship to the things of God, and that is all. That which we allow to come forth from God is that which gives us value.
How does an individual become a specific focalization in some sphere of our Body? How does one become a leader? By consistently letting something of God come forth, so that the individual can be depended upon to always be spiritually available, at least with respect to some sphere, be it ever so small. There is something that can be depended upon, something that is always there.
If the individual, with his human mind, tries to determine that: “I have such and such talents and abilities; I ought to be recognized because of those talents; I ought to be allowed certain freedoms. I have lived a certain number of years and done a certain number of things”—that does not have any meaning, at least not until it is coupled with something else. The talents an individual has are important, but when the outer mind tries to determine what they are and how they should be used and developed, nothing worthwhile results. In a true process of evolving from the state of the fallen world to the state of the restoration, nothing, at any point along the way, can become fixed in relationship to the outer manifestation of form until it has reached a point where it conforms absolutely with the Inner Pattern.
There is a state of change. The one thing that is fixed is our Love Response to God, so that in the fulfilling of the Law the various phases of Truth may be revealed by the cycles of our daily lives. Every day is different. Every pattern of manifestation is different. Things change, and we praise God that they do—either change and movement toward elimination for that which does not respond, or change and movement toward a higher assimilation for that which does respond.
The process of letting go is something that must be in operation all the time. There are human tendencies to try to pre-determine the nature and extent of one's own value and to try to impose that upon others. It will not work that way. Why have I had the degree of value that I have had to you? Because, regardless of anything, there was something within the scope of my expression which could serve you, could help you move along the Way, and accomplish that for which you are here. It was because there was, and is, an expression of service that is not confined to some narrow sphere but that is able to extend into every situation, into every aspect of our function. That is not a claim on my part. It is something that has been demonstrated, and that you know. That example should inspire you to go and do likewise? How would you go and do likewise? By trying to imitate me? No. There is not room at my point for both of us. One or the other would get pushed out. I do not want to try to fill your point, and I do not think you want to try to fill mine. I have suggested a few times that if any of you wanted to try it I might take a vacation, providing, of course, that you could prove you could do the job.
What is “doing likewise?” What is it for you? It begins with doing all the things that are at hand. We have covered them over and over, but let us see if we can connect them up a little in the sense of a deeper realization. The human being tends to have certain convictions as to what is possible and what is not possible. He tends to govern his concept about and attitude toward the future on the basis of the past. You meet an individual today and his attitude will probably be governed almost entirely by what he has experienced with respect to you in the past. This business of depending on the past to provide the view of the future can be very misleading.
The past reveals some important lessons. That which is out of the past in the sense of reality provides to a high degree that with which we have to work today. But there is, generally speaking, either a pessimism with respect to the future or an unwarranted optimism. If, moving according to the Central Pattern, I undertake to modify the unwarranted optimism, the individual thinks that I am unappreciative of his enthusiasm and reflecting on his vision, and he is inclined to either rebel or become lethargic. On the other hand, if the individual is inclined to the pessimistic view there is, actually, in such a case, a great deal of denial—denying that which is and shall be; there is a holding back; there is not an openness to the free flow of the Spirit of the Living Christ; there is not an effective accomplishment.
Living in this present moment, letting the Current of the Spirit manifest now, not holding back, not running ahead of the Lord, we begin to find certain qualities of the Spirit expressing through ourselves in relationship to all circumstances, and if we keep oriented, open, fulfilling the Law, that Current increases day by day because we are opened more fully, cleansed more fully, allowing the things of God to have greater meaning. Sooner or later there is a consistent manifestation of something that is of God appearing through the individual. The moment that becomes absolute, consistent and dependable it becomes a point in the Creative Field. It cannot be considered as a point in the Creative Field until it has reached that state of consistency in the manifestation of the things of God; but once it is there, whatever it is that is of God manifesting through the individual, so that it stands—no matter who comes or goes, what is said or done by anyone, it is there—then that becomes focalization in the Creative Field with respect to the One Christ Body. The full use of that focus may not immediately appear in the eyes of the individual involved. There may be a lot of waiting, doing meanwhile, but waiting, for the greater fulfilment, while points manifest here, there and everywhere, while the cycles work out, because all of these fulfilments depend upon the degree of response to reality made manifest in those involved. According to thy faith, or response, so be it unto thee. That has been emphasized from the beginning.
Once the current begins to move through the individual he is inclined to become self-active, trying to use it according to his own vision, trying to make something out of it, and trying to set it into a state where it would be recognized. We do not have to try to get God to recognize the things of reality. We do not have to act as if God simply has no perception with respect to that which is of Himself. We do not have to try to get human beings to recognize it, in the sense of self-aggrandizement at least. We have to let our Light shine so that it can be recognized, but when we work with God in the Creative Cycles of Being we let these things work out in their appointed seasons. We do not have to try to get recognition. God gives the recognition.
The Master said, with respect to prayer, something that deals with this subject very directly: “And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men.” A good deal of praying among emissaries has been of that type, trying to make something manifest out here, so that it could be seen of men instead of letting something be established in the Creative Field—a positive point of focus that never is controlled by the outer circumstance. What does He say? “And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you. They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”
It is this statement of our Master's that provides the central, fundamental key in connection with this whole subject as we have been considering it. When we let that which is of God find expression through us we are not concerned by the fact that it is in secret, that it is not seen and known of men immediately. “Thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.” Why is it stated thus? So that we may realize that God recognizes those things in human beings that are of Himself. We do not have to convince Him if it is there. If it is there it will be revealed in season. It will be known of God and in season it will be known of men. There is absolutely nothing worthwhile in this world that does not provide a means, a form, through which some aspect of the Living Christ can find manifestation, and its value is only that it does allow the Spirit of the Living Christ to have meaning on earth.
I think you begin to realize more fully the vast array of aspects which are contained within the Spirit of the Living Christ. These Spirits that are of God are all contained in the One Spirit, and if we are to accept the Pattern as given in Revelation as giving any indication in this matter, it will take at least 144,000 people to give adequate focus—not complete meaning, but adequate focus—to the various aspects of the Spirit of the Living Christ. Is there any opportunity for you? If we had 144,000 people functioning correctly in relationship to the Plan and Pattern of God we could feel that the focus of that which is the Spirit of the Living Christ is established on earth, but not the fulness of its meaning and expression, because that would take all the people living on earth.
We have the opportunity of providing a Focus Point in the Creative Field by which God can do the works on earth. The consistency of manifestation of that point of focus determines its value. If it is there for one minute and not the next, it has only potential value. No one individual has to be the whole thing. You do not have to be, in the sense of the absolute or ultimate, perfect in all respects. I have known some of you who have carried special responsibilities in working with me, to be criticized because someone found this or that wrong with you—someone could find something to criticize in you. Oh yes, I know. But those who have carried those special responsibilities with me have all had one thing in common. There was at least one point where I could depend upon them absolutely at all times, under all circumstances, to be that, without regard to anything else. Maybe they do have their faults, maybe they are not the perfect expression of the Spirit of the Living Christ in all things, maybe they have a lot of room to grow. That is all right. That growing will work out in season if there is that one thing I can depend upon, one thing that is always there, one thing that is never denied by attitude or expression. Those who have been providing that one thing, dependable all the time, are the ones who have been providing what Focus I have had in this Creative Field, that might be used.
So, I trust that there is further cleansing this morning, and that all vain imaginings about what one's own God Being is, or was, or is going to be, have been set aside and cast out, that each one my realize that that which is of God that finds expression through you in outer form here on earth is that which makes you worthwhile. Nothing else counts, not in this moment. There may be other things that have a potentiality for the future but all that counts now is that which is now in form, in manifest expression on earth, from God through you. Your capacity to let the things of God manifest will surely increase as you let the cycles work, but that potential has no immediate value. It will have value when the form of its expression appears from God.
Let us not hinder the development and expression of the things of God through one another. Let us not make it harder for one another. Let us seek in all things to serve one another, so that we can make it as easy as possible to allow that which is of the Spirit of the Living Christ to find manifestation, and in so serving, we ourselves will be getting into that position, attitude and condition which will allow the increase of the working of the Spirit of God through us. I thank God for this hour and for your response therein. “Eye hath not seen nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love and serve Him.”
