The Creative Word

The  Creative  Word

Martin Cecil   March 27, 1957

If we are to be in position to play our part in that creative work to which God has called us we must all actively participate in the creative cycles which are moving. We must all be aware, at least in some measure, of what it is that is moving, and we all need to experience the results of the movement of the creative cycle through ourselves.

It is sometimes imagined that, somehow or other, those who are responsible for God's creative work on earth can establish direct and controlled creative cycles that are operating in relationship to the needs out there beyond somewhere, as though the operator, so to speak, were entirely separate from the creative cycles that are in operation. Of course that is not true. Whatever needs to be done must be done through those who have the responsibility of allowing the extension of the creative cycles into the world to others. If we recognize that there is something to be achieved out there in the world—a tremendous undertaking—how is it going to be done? Are we going to be able to gather together in our hands, so to speak, sufficient power to project it out there in order to accomplish something in relationship to the world? No, it does not work that way. It works through us; that is, if we accept the responsibilities of our Ministry in the Name of the LORD. That which needs to work out out there must work out in here first; and as it works out in relationship to the point of focalization, it may extend then out into the world. But it is not something separate from ourselves. Therefore it is evident that we need to have an understanding of what it is that is unfolding in relationship to ourselves, because then we can see how that cycle works in relationship to those on out beyond.

With respect to creative cycles, we know that there are what Ezekiel spoke of as “wheels within wheels.” We might consider, for instance, one Creative Day as it is described in the Book of Genesis. We know that that Creative Day is considerably longer than twenty-four hours, and within the scope of that Creative Day there were sub-cycles working, and within the scope of the sub-cycles there were other smaller cycles still, and so on. But the same principles operate in relationship to all true creative processes. We recognize, for instance, in relationship to our own Program, that there is a large cycle including all of you and many others. With respect to that cycle there is the necessity for movement in it and the experience of progress and change. Such things have been unfolding over the years. But in relationship to the specific requirements of our Ministry there are numerous points where sub-cycles are properly initiated. We cannot really separate any cycle in the Divine Pattern from any other. They are all part of one thing. As a cycle is initiated, or what we have called a sub-cycle, we recognize that no matter what went before, no matter what is unfolding in other cycles, in relationship to the one that is being initiated the creative principles find application. Even though those creative principles may have been recognized as finding application in relationship to some other cycle, they must be seen again always with respect to the one that is being initiated.

In many places in the Bible we have mention made of the Word, and of the importance of words. In the 107th Psalm, for instance, it is recorded in one of the verses: “He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.” “He sent his word, and healed them.” In this we may recognize again that the Word is vitally important to creative processes. In fact there is no healing at any time in relationship to anyone except on the basis of the Word of God. “He sent his word, and healed them.” That is the only way by which healing takes place. We also have our Master's own expression: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” Life itself is dependent upon the Word of God.

Human beings, when they think about words, consider primarily the form which is made manifest in sound. Perhaps there might be consideration given to the written word also, but with respect to creative processes we are primarily concerned with what is said. “And God said…” “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God”—the spoken word. That which man recognizes or assumes to be the spoken word is actually not the Word. It is a word taking form at this level of being. It is fortunate indeed that man's words are not actually the Creative Word. They have an effect, it is true, and they have been involved in the process which has produced the chaos and confusion in the world, but man's words of themselves are not creative words. The Word itself, the true Word, is an invisible thing. We have seen, for instance, how the word Word, used in the 1st chapter of the Gospel according to John, refers to Shekinah, or the Christ, that which expresses from God. God is not left Word-less just because His words are not spoken so that human beings may hear them, understand and comprehend them on earth. The Word of God, then, is spoken by God, and the true Word is consequently, insofar as man is concerned, an invisible thing. But if there is to be a creative process in the Divine sense out here on earth the Creative Word must take form out here on earth; it must be spoken at the level where the creative cycle is supposed to operate. All the vibrational factors of the Creative Word of God, as it has specific application to His creative cycles here on earth, properly come to focus in the form of words which are brought forth through man.

This morning, in one of the classes, I pointed out that the words used in the Motherland Tongue were not arbitrary things established by man. Of course they were not, because in the beginning man was Divine Man and he was not functioning self-actively, separate from God. Therefore he was not imposing anything upon God. That which was of God was brought forth through man according to the Divine Design, under the Divine Control. Therefore all the vibrational factors which specifically applied to some certain word which needed to be given form on earth came to focus and the Word itself revealed the essences of that which was focalized. I used the illustration of the word God. Human beings use the word “God” in a multitude of different ways, and the concepts which human beings hold with respect to God are many and varied. There is a tangled pattern of distortion with respect to man's understanding of God. Therefore the word “God” itself is not a true symbol; it is something which man has arbitrarily established insofar as the English language is concerned. If we spoke some other language we would use some other word. But there is just One Word that is a true symbol of God, of the actuality of God, the reality of God, the truth of God. Of course until the vibratory field is clear insofar as man is concerned, so that the truth is established there, and all the vibratory factors which come to focus in that which truly is God in the Word which should be used to reveal the truth of God, that word which does so reveal the truth cannot be spoken, it cannot be known. So the words that man actually uses are not true symbols of that which comes to focus in relationship to them, because insofar as man generally speaking is concerned, that which comes to focus in relationship to His word is a tangle of distortions. It is not the reality. It is not the true thing. And so man's words, no matter what his language may be, are substitute symbols. Because of the variety of concepts, because of the variety of states of human beings, the variety of patterns in which man functions, we have a variety of terms, in a variety of languages. But rightly speaking there is only one language, the Motherland Tongue, and in the Motherland Tongue the truth comes to focus in relationship to that which needs to be expressed and the Word that is brought forth focalizes the essences of that which has been brought to focus, and the spoken word then is the starting point for a true creative process.

We have taken note of the record in the Book of Genesis, where it speaks of Adam having all the animals parade past him and he gave them all names. And it seems to human beings rather a foolish picture. But here was the creative process by which all that should appear on the surface of the earth was being given form. The cycle by which it might take form was being initiated, and the truth with respect to each specific creative form to be came to focus first in a word, the Word which focalized the true essence of that which was to appear in form. The vibratory factors were all established from the Divine standpoint; they were invisible, nothing made manifest yet. These vibratory factors were to be brought to focus in man, who was the instrument for God's creative processes on earth; and the first requirement in relationship to the bringing forth of the true forms, according to the Divine Design and under God's control, was through the Spoken Word. Human beings, having functioned so long in self-activity, find it hard to comprehend. It seems as though man would just have to think up a name for this particular animal, we will say, that was going to be brought forth. He might see the vibratory factors in relationship to it and, having seen the vibratory factors, he would figure out: “Now what would be a good name for that?” But it does not work that way. It was not man's responsibility to try to figure out anything. It was his responsibility to let the vibratory factors come to focus in himself so that they would bring forth through him the right word, which would contain and begin to give form to the essences of that which was being created.

Now I have been outlining this process for you in relationship to something that was of the far-distant past, in order that you might begin to see the principles involved, in order that you might begin to see how it works; because it was exactly the process by which anything that is of God can be brought forth now. The Creative Word is absolutely essential. For the time being we are using substitutes. In other words, that which is brought forth on the basis of the substitute will not and cannot be the final product; it will only be moving in the right direction. It will be an interim creation so that gradually, moving forward in the creative cycle so established, we may finally reach a point where it is possible for the vibratory factors in their pure essences to be brought to focus here on earth and bring forth the Creative Word in relationship to themselves. The Creative Word in that sense, in that ultimate sense of bringing forth that which is the perfect manifestation of the Divine Design on earth as God created His world to be—those creative words cannot be brought forth now; they could not exist now. We could not speak them now. As has so often been emphasized, that which would be perfect in the ultimate state, if it were arbitrarily established now would be imperfect, it would not be right. It would not work anyway; it could not appear. The delicate vibratory factors involved could not be brought forth in the harsh, disturbed condition that is present in this distorted world at the present time. There is much of substance itself which cannot manifest in the world as it now is, substance which was used originally when the world was first created and Divine Man was functioning correctly on earth. That which human beings do in their self-activity, their conflicts, their harsh, hard attitudes, their unfeelingness in relationship to things Divine, would simply prevent any such manifestation; or, if it appeared, such self-activity would destroy it quickly, even as it has been destroyed. That is why it is not here.

So words are vitally important, and we remember what our Master said: “By thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” If we are to allow any creative cycle to work, to unfold, and to bring forth that for which it was initiated, we must realize that words play a vital part in that process. If we allow distorted vibratory factors out of the world to be brought to focus in ourselves, so that words are brought forth through us giving form to the essences of those evil vibratory patterns, then we are doing that which destroys the beginning manifestation of such expression of Divine Form that can appear at this point if it is protected. And here we begin to see the necessity for the reestablishment of the hedge as something stable and consistent—the hedge round about, and within which the developing patterns of things Divine are safe. They are not safe when the spoken word gives focus to the essences of the evil vibratory patterns in the world. Therefore I trust you can see clearly how vitally important it is that we should only allow to come to focus in ourselves that which will bring forth in the Spoken Word something that is true to the Divine Essences. Only that will maintain the atmosphere in which things Divine can develop and grow. “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” Consequently we recognize that it is essential we should be pure in heart. If at any point any of you find yourselves responding in the wrong direction, so that something out of the world begins to come to focus in you of the distorted vibratory patterns, there is the necessity of course for repenting quickly. But above all, do not let it take form in words; for, taking form in words, it begins to bring it out into the creative field where the the Garden of God is growing, and there is destruction. The Word of God heals. “He sent his word, and healed them, and saved them from their destructions,” the destructions which result from the unpolarized, self-active words of man. The world is full of words—human beings talking, giving focalized expression to the essences of the unreal constantly. The world is full of noise, a shattering and a destructive thing.

It is needful that there should be a protected place somewhere on earth where the Garden of God may grow, where only the Word of God is spoken and the essences of the unreal find no opportunity to take form in words. Gradually, then, the atmosphere may be established, coming out of the winter of man's self-activity into the springtime which leads to summer, the summertime where the atmosphere is such that the things of God can grow profusely without fear of destruction. We are just emerging into the time when there may be re-established on earth a point through which the Creative Word may again be spoken on earth, so that the things of God may begin again to take form on earth. Are we going to let it be meaningful, let it bring forth what it may and should? Are we going to share together in providing that creative instrument through which the Word of God may be spoken, so that He may send His Word to heal the children of men, and to heal His world here on earth, and to save them from their destructions?

“Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” As you begin to see these things, and comprehend them, the words of that verse take on new meaning. “Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” Here they are working. Shall we share in letting the fulfilment come? Shall we remember these things which we have considered this evening in the days to come, so that we only permit the essences of things Divine to come to focus in relationship to ourselves? As we do that, our words will be truly creative, bringing forth the things of God in His Garden committed to our care and keeping. Let us dress the Garden and keep it, living by every Word which proceeds out of the mouth of God.
