Hear Me Respect Me
Love Me Be Me
Martin Exeter September 27, 1987
For so long have the children of men dwelt in the tents of wickedness that the courts of the Lord are remembered no more. This is the fatal amnesia. Our friend Immanuel Velikovsky pointed to the cataclysms that have occurred on this earth, immense horrors for the children of men. He suggests that because of this there has been a general state of amnesia, because no one wished to recall such horrendous events. That is perhaps an aspect of the amnesia but a very peripheral one. There is a deeper suppression of guilt which relates to the cause of those cataclysmic events. Human beings usually assume that the cause of such things is God; they refer to them as “acts of God.” This is one way of excusing human beings from responsibility. But there is this very deeply established guilt in the subconscious of all human beings, well covered over, so that there is a loss of memory to such an extent that there is a general unwillingness to take any real responsibility for anything. “It's not our fault.” Someone else is to blame—ultimately, whatever the Deity may be, He is to blame. Destructiveness is imputed to God, to the acts of God.
It is a little difficult these days to evade the fact that human beings themselves have been busy producing their troubles, which are moving toward a point of climax. They have dwelt in the tents of wickedness for so long. By the way, wickedness is usually seen as relating to evil. I would suggest that it relates equally to good. It relates to the choices that human beings make, whether they are deemed to be good or bad. It is all wickedness. And the results of wickedness are not far to seek. In one way or another all of us as individuals have experienced such results. I trust that we have reached a level of maturity now, so that we do not blame someone else for our own troubles, even though we can, so accurately still I am sure, pinpoint the source of our troubles. But those sources seen external to ourselves are simply a reflection of what is already internal to ourselves. Honesty requires that we admit this, so that we nevermore assume that there is some external devil somewhere intent upon our downfall, usually easily spotted in somebody else.
There is an amnesia, certainly, related to the effects of a more deeply hidden cause. There can be no restoration of memory as to the truth of man until that cause is unveiled, until we reach a point where we can acknowledge the fact of it as it relates to ourselves individually. Clearly it relates to mankind as a whole, and that is an obvious aspect of the matter; but what is occurring on that larger scale cannot be correctly handled until there is the acknowledgment of our own responsibility as an individual. We have seen this most clearly. The necessity for repentance, then, puts in an appearance. But the repentance is really only the matter of letting the basic cause for the loss of memory be unveiled, so that as individuals we are ready to admit it, regardless of what anybody else does, regardless of anyone else's behavior anywhere on the face of the earth, and I suppose particularly with respect to those who are close to us. These are the ones that get under our skin at times. But they're not really getting under our skin. There is something under there already, of which we become aware because of the behavior of other people. This is very useful if we see it in the right light. We should be very thankful that other people unveil to us what is already under our skin, what is already present within ourselves, so that the cause of the trouble may be acknowledged.
There is only one way by which this remembrance can come, and that is by reason of the spirit of truth. It was said, very truly, the spirit of truth shall call all things to your remembrance. This is the dissipation of amnesia, is it not? We may take a look at some of these cataclysmic events, and that's fine; they certainly were terrible things in human experience. But evidently somebody survived or we wouldn't be here. What is more important is that there should be a vivid awareness of what it was that caused this disruption of the natural cycles as they move in this solar system. This could hardly be called an act of God. It would, rather, be described as a failure of man. It certainly indicates that man has a very vital and central part to play in the creative processes of this universe as they come to focus here in the solar system and in this planet. It implies that we are not so useless as we thought we were.
Out of this deep, hidden guilt spring all the ways of wickedness. We cannot help but dwell in the tents of wickedness when we are born on earth. It is of little consequence as to our racial background, our national background, our religious affiliations, or anything else. These are all outgrowths of this central guilt, an endeavor to assuage the guilt in various ways. We will try, for instance, to worship God in a way that will be pleasing to Him, so that He won't clobber us so much. The fact of the matter is that He never clobbered anyone at any time. All the clobbering has simply been the result of human behavior, consequent upon the suppression of memory. The spirit of truth alone can restore memory. But how does the spirit of truth put in an appearance? Things work in very reasonable ways. All the ingredients that are necessary for the spirit of truth to be present are on hand.
“Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.” The spirit of truth comes because there is One who comes in the name of the Lord. Then the spirit of truth can be “with you, and shall be in you.” The spirit of truth must first be with you, in form and expression, through One who comes in the name of the Lord. When there is a resonance within oneself related to the spirit of the One who comes in the name of the Lord, then one will be drawn to that spirit—it is a drawing into the experience of a greater resonance of the spirit of truth within oneself. But for that to have focus and to have meaning, there must be One who comes in the name of the Lord. This is the way it works. There must be focus. This is something that human beings have steadfastly rejected. When there is such a focus, and the spirit of truth is present in radiant expression because of that, then it is possible to have one's memory restored. The restoration of memory comes as that same spirit of truth emerges through oneself.
The word of the One who comes in the name of the Lord is “Hear me.” That's the first word. “Hear me. Respect me. Love me. Be me. Share the responsibility of being the One who comes in the name of the Lord, in the expression of the spirit of truth.” There are not five billion expressions of the spirit of truth. The expression of the spirit of truth is One. There are five billion—or might be—differentiations of that spirit, but they would all be that spirit. And it works this way. One comes in the name of the Lord. There is a focus of spirit provided, the spirit of truth, which is capable of dissipating amnesia. All human beings on the face of the earth have forgotten who they are and why they are here. What is the purpose of man on earth? Who can answer that? We have been talking about it now: to participate in the creative process, which works in a very definite and specific way. And one can't second-guess that. It works the way it works.
If we begin to let ourselves be drawn by the spirit of truth, because there is some substance in us that resonates in response to it, then we begin to awaken to an awareness of the spirit of truth in expression through the One who comes in the name of the Lord. This may be succeeded by willingness to hear, to listen, possibly to understand. Then respect is engendered as understanding comes, and this is found to be love. Love puts in an appearance because one was associated with the creative process and willing to let it work without too much interference. We do interfere because we are all inclined to want to have our own way. But when there is love, then we hear the final word which is “Be me.” Accept exactly the same responsibility of being in expression the spirit of truth. When this is so, there is no conflict between those who are the spirit of truth in expression. It all blends together. Individually speaking, what is expressed is not all the same; but it all fits together, and it fills in the details of the reality of man, what man is, what he is here for, why he exists. Life has meaning. The revelation of that meaning is the expression of the spirit of truth—the revelation of the meaning of that focus of life which is present in oneself. One can't become aware of the meaning of that without becoming aware of the meaning of life as it relates to the whole. It's the same life, after all. But to come again to the spirit of truth, to acknowledge the fact of the One who comes in the name of the Lord—“blessed is he.”
Here is the spirit of truth, which is saying, in effect, “Hear me. Respect me. Love me. Be me.” Because I have had a particular responsibility in this regard, which I have assumed for myself, those words may relate seemingly to me, but it is to the spirit of my expression. Hear me. Respect me. Love me. If there is a genuine hearing, these other things follow along naturally. Many of you have found them following along naturally, until the point is reached where you say, “It is me.” When that point is reached, all concerned are in agreement. You could define that as peace. Human beings in the general sense have no idea what peace would be. There never has been peace in the memory of human beings.
Life doesn't appear in spurts. It is really a steady flow. If it is allowed to flow naturally because we don't contend with it, we will find that it is something smooth. There may be some natural pulsations, just as the seasons come and go; but there is a natural flow. So we may participate in this natural flow. But it is the spirit of truth that makes all this possible, because the state of Man is the state of embodying that natural flow without interruption. It provides whatever is necessary for the thinking of the mind, for the feelings of the heart, for the life of the body. There are external things provided, which have been messed up terribly by human behaviour—human behavior which has denied the spirit of truth. It's been intent on going its own way, doing its own thing, arranging things on earth the way it wants them; and then when they are arranged, it objects to them. Let the spirit of truth be present, acknowledged.
I could say, without proving anything: I am come in the name of the Lord to give focus to the spirit of truth. This is not an exclusive thing at all, as so many seem to try to make it when they form their cults and so on. But a cult can only form when the focus point is not the spirit of truth. Mind you, human beings desperately try to make things into cults. They have tried to make what is happening here into a cult. Some people observe from outside and say it is a cult, but they say that principally because it is a cult from inside in the view of some. It only becomes what it really is as one acknowledges the spirit of truth, by saying “Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.” Then, having said that, one hears, one respects, one loves, and one is. Then there is no separation.
The spirit of truth, focused and in expression, is not exclusive, but it is absolute. It can't be contended with without fatal results—there has been this persistent contending with the spirit of truth. This vicious circle in which human beings have been moving cannot be transcended without the action of the spirit of truth, which brings to remembrance the reality of Man. Accepting the reality of Man is repentance. Let the spirit of truth be your expression in living, and that is all that is necessary. It will restore memory. Many of you can say now, with a certain clarity of awareness, why it is you are present on earth. One is present on earth to give expression to the spirit of truth, and if you do it you know why you are on earth. If you refuse to do it you don't know. All this is very simple, really. Human beings are inclined to make things so complicated.
Let behavior be restored to the behavior of one who dwells in the Courts of the King. One cannot discover the forms of such behavior and then try to conform to those forms and consequently experience the spirit of truth. It doesn't work that way. It is the expression of that spirit in living which creates its own forms of behavior, and those forms of behavior mesh between all who are letting the spirit of truth create those forms. There are those who have been associated with the Emissary ministry who have tried to make behavior forms and then insisted that everybody should conform to those behavior forms. What a waste of time! There are people doing that all over the world as it is, in various ways. The pervasive influence on earth says to human beings, “You conform to these cultural forms; to these religious forms; you conform to these scientific forms; to all these human inventions, and you'll be all right.” It hasn't proved out that way, because it's a lie. Yet most people imagine that they are being good if they are conforming to the particular pattern which has been foisted on them. It's deadly—based in this loss of memory.
The spirit of truth says, “Remember”, and you will, if you accept the spirit of truth, if you accept me and allow me to be you—allow the spirit of truth to be your expression. It will be individual and unique in that sense, but it produces the quality of behavior in thought and word, feeling, action, which permits a person to be in the Courts of the King. If one has the capability of dwelling in the Courts of the King and one allows that capability to characterize one's living, immediately one is in the Courts of the King, no longer dwelling in the tents of wickedness. Repentance has occurred and the person hardly noticed it! Sometimes a person needs to notice it, so that there may be a willingness to let the change occur, and sometimes it takes quite a shaking to do that. We subject ourselves to these things, we build our own troubles. Finally they may overwhelm us, and that's that; or they may cause us to wake up and say, “That's enough of this nonsense!”
The provision has been made. The spirit of truth is present. The expression of it is clear, focused, consistent. Why not be aligned with that? Why not hear what it is? Why not respect this above all? Why not then be willing to know the reality of love? And, in that, one is back where one might have been if all this interim had not occurred, the interim of human rebellion—the determination on the part of human beings to have their own way. That is the fall—and anyone who says, “Well the fall never took place,” didn't examine very closely what's happening in human experience on earth. The evidence of it is everywhere, and particularly in one's own experience. What a mess! We have the opportunity to emerge out of that, and have been assuming the responsibility of doing this, sharing that responsibility, sharing the expression of the spirit of truth. And behold, we begin to mesh, in spite of all our judgments and everything else.
We find ourselves being put together in a new design—or a design that is new to us at least—I suppose you could say the state of society in the Kingdom of the King, in the Courts of the King. And we express the spirit of truth consistently or out we go. It's a matter of being what one really is—the truth of oneself—and in that is the restoration of Man on earth. And when Man is on earth the creative process is brought to focus and all things work together to perfection. That is what is happening now because there is an emergence, to this extent, of Man on earth, of the spirit of truth in focused expression. What the spirit of truth says, in effect—it doesn't quite put it this way—is “Shape up or ship out.” That is the way it is. It is all being brought to issue. We share the responsibility, letting it be brought to issue in ourselves so that it may be brought to issue with respect to everybody on the face of the earth. And this is happening.
