Mixing Vibrations
Mixing Vibrations Simply Does Not Work
from Mixing — Dianetics
Uranda April 24, 1953
I wanted to have the opportunity of speaking to you for a few minutes this evening. We have considered something at various times in various ways of what has been called an examination. [greatcosmicstory.blogspot.com/2017/07/the-from-history-ages-uranda-march-23.html] I feel that a process of examination has been taking place here, with respect to our whole school program during the past few days. In the material which was released with respect to the formation of this class it was plainly stated that our presence here on Sunrise Ranch was for one purpose: to study the materials presented in relationship to this teaching as it finds expression in the GPC Services Training School. And it was emphasized that other teachings or ideas, concepts, in which individuals might be interested, would have to be set aside in relationship to this program. I recognize that certain ones were interested in what is sometimes called Dianetics [Scientology], and I have left this pattern alone for some period of time, waiting for those of you who have such interest to have an opportunity of making a fair examination into the principles and factors involved. During the past few days there’s been an outworking by reason of which the factors as they relate to Dianetics have been given something of a resurgence of interest. From my standpoint I feel that it is obvious that at any time when we extend an open invitation to someone to come here to consider what we teach, the privilege of sitting in on the classes, the free opportunity of reading lesson material, etc., that there should be enough honesty of purpose, enough basic understanding of the primary principles of courtesy if nothing else, to realize that such a welcome does not include the privilege of undertaking to emphasize supposed value of some other teaching, some other idea, some other train of thought.
The pattern as it has worked out here with respect to Dick Beale is something that has all the earmarks of something definitely dishonest. I have emphasized over and over again that one of the primary factors necessary to progress in reality is honesty. I like to trust everyone; and it is my pattern and policy to trust everyone until he or she proves untrustworthy. Just prior to his leaving this morning Dick spoke to me about the possibility of returning if, as he put it, “If I am welcome”; and I made the statement, “You are welcome.” I didn’t undertake to expand on it; and yet while he as a man is welcome, if he wishes to come here to learn something, if he wishes to come here to study, some of the ideas which he represents are not welcome. Any undertaking to present and promulgate some other teaching, such as Dianetics, or any other—I don’t care what it is—in what I classify as an underhanded manner, is definitely not welcome. It is not right. It is not fair. I gave him a welcome, and as far as he is a man is concerned he is still welcome, providing he wants to learn something; but if he expects to come here to teach others, to sell some other idea, he is not welcome. And I felt that under the circumstances it is necessary for me to bring this thing to point with respect to our whole Class.
There have been some ideas that it was only right, unprejudiced, etc., to freely examine something else. If anyone here wishes to study something else, then he or she is in the wrong place. And if anyone here expects to become a GPC Server and mix it with Dianetics, then he or she is in the wrong place—or mix it with anything else. It cannot be successfully mixed. As far as Dianetics is concerned, if a person wants to study that, believe in it, that’s the business of that person, whoever it may be—but not here, not on Sunrise Ranch, not with respect to those who are attending the Servers Training School. And if there is going to be a sideline process of study considering Dianetics in connection with that which we are presenting, it won’t work. It is wrong. Such an individual cannot possibly experience the greatest fulfilment from that which is offered here.
I have had occasion to examine various publications, releases of various sorts by the Dianetics groups; and for someone who is interested in what I would classify as a kindergarten play in the intellectual field, where there is no hope of ever getting anywhere, it is perhaps all right. But when someone comes in here and on the basis of an invitation accepts on the face of it, to see what we teach, and then proceeds to function on the basis of Dianetics or anything else, then I must take some kind of action. There have been various comments that have been reported to me raising questions with respect to a comparison of the value of the teaching here and the teaching of Dianetics. Now, if there is any question on that score in anyone’s mind here, I have no objection to any person going in whatever direction he or she may choose. If anyone wants to study Dianetics, that is that person’s privilege—off of Sunrise Ranch—but not on Sunrise Ranch.
Why do I say that? Because I’m in some sense fearful of Dianetics or what it might be able to do or accomplish? Not at all. Because I know it is a waste of time. And because I know that if anyone is going to accomplish what we are here to accomplish, it cannot be done by dividing allegiance. If someone thinks that Dianetics is the thing, all right, don’t divide your allegiance. And if you think that that and this are the same thing, you are wrong. They are not. Not in any sense of the word. And if anyone can hear me speak more than once, or twice perhaps, and imagine that they belong to anything like the same level of consideration, then I suggest that such a state of consciousness indicates a level of intellect that will not permit such a person to become an effective Server. This class is not being conducted just to give someone an opportunity to compare what we teach with something else, or to try to integrate it with something else. It will not integrate with anything. If one is going to learn to understand the basic principles of spiritual psychiatry as we present it, only confusion can come from a consideration of the ideas presented by Dianetics.
The important thing is this: We open our doors to anyone who wants to study the principles which we present; we gladly, freely, welcome without respect to background. I never make it a habit to cross-examine anyone with respect to motives or anything else. The pattern of what you have believed or what you have not believed has never been my concern. And I trust each one to be honest. But it is not honesty to divide the pattern of consideration. It isn’t fair. We are here for a purpose. There is a crying need for GPC Servers. There is a crying need for an enlarged understanding of the things of God. I’m not interested in discrediting someone else or something else. I’m interested in allowing each person to grow along the natural lines of his or her own patterns of response and fulfilment; but as I’ve emphasized over and over again from the beginning, it takes honesty. And it is not honest to try to mix it. It isn’t fair to yourself. It isn’t fair to this teaching. So, we are here to study that which is presented by the Third Sacred School. We are not here for any other purpose. And if anyone has any other purpose, then this is the wrong place for that person.
We had a focalization of the principles, purposes, portrayals with respect to the outworkings of the past and the present, and that which is significant in relationship to the future, in our classwork this morning. Whether you recognize it or not, as far as I’m concerned this past few days has been an examination, and some of you have not passed that examination too well. The time has come to make some choices. I’m not going to force any issues tonight but I wish to make the matter very, very plain and clear, so that there can be no misunderstanding. If you are going to be true to the basic purposes of your Being and your presence here, if you’re going to be honest, you’re going to leave Dianetics alone in relationship to our program here. And if you think that you are going to take what you learn here and some of the principles of Dianetics and mix them later on in service out in the field, you will not have recognition as a GPC Server. We cannot have it mixed. The mixed thing is no good. So that’s about all I have to say tonight. If what I have presented over the weeks and in the past, what has been presented in this school as a whole, is not sufficient to establish in your consciousness a basis of a decision, then what value is there in considering what we offer? So in fairness to everyone concerned it was necessary that I bring the thing out into the open and to point. We simply can’t have a divided vibration. It isn’t fair in any direction.
Uranda invited a dialogue with Class members engaged in the Dianetics process,
and then he concluded with the following comments
I have no fault to find ever under any circumstance with respect to any path by which any person has come. It is never a matter of condemnation or criticism as far as I’m concerned, and I recognize there are various steps along the way where one can receive benefit and help. We can thank God for that. I’ve known people that got help from Unity. I’ve known people that got help from the Roman Catholic teaching. I’ve known people that got help from the Methodists and Baptists and even the Holy Rollers—all kinds of people—they received help and I find no fault with that help. My point is that merely because we have received blessings by some means along the way, we should not take a position which causes us to refuse to let those blessings or that help achieve its greatest possible service. There may be a door, a door through which one may enter into a given room, and that door serves a wonderful part in the outworking of an individual’s life when that door does open. But if merely because there was a certain door through which one passed one is going to stop at the door and say, “I have received so much help here I am not going to go on to that which is beyond the door,” then it is of little value. It is the tendency in human beings to accept those things which have been stepping stones as places to sojourn. It is not in any spirit of condemnation towards any that I mention these things, but in recognition of the fundamental fact that divided vibrations simply do not work.
I am not interested in trying to persuade anyone to make a promise. Promises are of small consequence as far as I’m concerned. You can perhaps under some circumstance persuade someone to make a promise but if you can, then under some circumstance that same person can be persuaded not to keep that promise, or to make some promise that conflicts. It is not by promises and vows that we get anywhere, but by reason of our central dedication to Truth as such. And if we are going to really make a success of letting the Truth make us free we have to reach a point of singleness of mind, singleness of purpose. We have to leave behind many things which have been of value to us in the past. The human tendency to cling to things that have been of value in the past so often produces a situation where one is fettered. I’m not asking anyone to make a promise. I’m simply undertaking to make my position clear so that we can realize that our purpose here is for one thing. I made it very clear in the introductory materials and it has to stand that way. If a person says, “Well, I have still some interest in this particular sphere and I wish to reserve the right to study some of it later,” or something of that nature, I’m not going to try to persuade that person to relinquish it. I’m not attempting to make anyone take the position of making choices in the sense of relationship to Truth. There are always tangent patterns appearing, and many very sincere, earnest people get into those tangents. If I simply leave it alone and fail to make the matter clear, then if something turns out on a disappointing basis I can conceivably be held responsible, to some degree at least. My concern is that we recognize that only the Truth can make us free. And if any person is not convinced by now that it is the Truth that is being presented here, without the fetterings of all the concepts and beliefs that have been shown through the past, if it has not been thoroughly evident to anyone who has attended these classes that we are not functioning on the basis of prejudice, if it is not clearly evident that we are not in any sense narrow-minded, then I do not believe that it’s possible to convey the idea. The fact is that the Truth and the Truth alone can succeed in relationship to the outworking in life, once we have begun to find a centering. It takes a centering—there must be a point of centering where there is agreement, where there is unification, where there is a mutual acceptance of responsibility. I am not attempting to compel anyone to accept the centering which is established here, but I am pointing to the fact that we cannot divide our allegiance. I ask you to make a search of your own souls.
If George here feels that he is being honest and sincere in moving in some other direction, accepting some other centering, I will not turn my hand over to stop him. I never do. Our gate is wide open, either to come in or go out. But here everything is working to one goal, one purpose, One Centering, to the glory of God and the blessings of the children of men. And it is not in some field of mental gymnastics that we can achieve that goal. And so, as far as I’m concerned, I will leave the point of choice up to each and every one. I never seek to impose it on anyone under any circumstance, but we do have to face the issue and make the choice. I think that’s all, unless someone else wishes to say something tonight. Bless your hearts, one and all. May the spirit of wisdom and understanding be in you, if there is in any sense a choice with respect to these things. But let us not have confusion. It is not by mixture but by purity that we attain the goal. And I would be remiss in my responsibilities to you if I did not make my positions very, very plain. Good night and God bless you.
Uranda Never Minced Words
Martin Cecil April 17, 1978 Special Session at Sunrise Ranch
We need to have a little intelligent discernment and spiritual perception with respect to our own natural rhythms, and the way our own physical bodies work and the way our minds work too. We need to be aware of these things. We need to be alert mentally speaking and alert spiritually speaking, so that we are in position to discern; and of course we need, above all, to be honest with ourselves. I was recalling an occasion, quite a while ago, when Uranda was still here, when the first Class was in session. I spent about a month down here in January of 1952. During that time I had opportunity to speak on occasion in various ways, to give a service perhaps, and afterwards Uranda and I used to discuss what had occurred, and this permitted a recognition of what needed attention in my own expression and what was present from the standpoint of the response of those who were present—and these things have a relatedness, incidentally.
I always enjoyed—not exactly post mortems, because I don't think it was dead—but a consideration of these things; and Uranda never minced words. Everything was brought out into the open, and that's the way I would wish it to be; but sometimes there were others present who became disturbed because of the things that Uranda was saying relative to me, and I heard secondhand that someone had said that "I don't know how Martin can take it." But I wasn't taking anything! I didn't have the experience of gritting my teeth and taking anything at all. I was enjoying the experience. It was just the reaction of somebody else. This was possible in my own experience because I knew what Uranda was saying before he said it. He may have said it and brought it out in a clearer way than was yet in my own consciousness, and I delighted in that, but it was in my own consciousness already. I had been honest enough to be able to see that it was there.
I have found over the years, in speaking with many people, that when I bring things out for them to look at they get all disturbed about it because they had not been alert themselves to what was present in themselves; they had never looked at it—not only alert enough to see but honest enough to see it. I never anticipate that someone is going to react all over the place when I bring something out. I anticipate they are sufficiently honest that they already know that it's there and that when it's brought out then here are two in agreement and it is dealt with.
Here is something that relates to the spirit of the New Earth: a conscious awareness of what is going on in the external sense, and certainly a conscious awareness of one's own limitations, of one's present state of consciousness. Whatever your present state is now, do you expect it to be that way forever? Of course most people expect it to get worse. If it's going to change, why should it have to change in a disintegrating fashion? It doesn't have to. It is the popular view that it will, and all who are attuned with the spirit of decay are experiencing disintegration. It is the only thing they can experience on that basis, but if we begin to be associated with the spirit of the New Earth then there is a constructive, integrating element of experience.
