The Spectacle of the Helpless God

There is that which I would convey to you that is far beyond the capacity of the sound of the word alone. So, we must in this hour communicate in Spirit and perceive with the ear and the eye of the heart. And I would express with the voice of the heart, trusting that the word may penetrate deeply and with enduring force into the depths of your consciousness, that we may share a larger service than we have yet known, and that we may discharge our responsibilities as men and women more effectively. I should like to tell you a story, a story that has its beginnings in the long ago, a story that began before the period of known history. And I think we shall entitle this story, The Spectacle of the Helpless God.
In the long ago a great and mighty God designed a sphere of creation, and with all those who shared His realm He thought to bring forth in the Cosmic scheme of things a place of exquisite Beauty, a realm of Love, and a Kingdom where Living should be a joy forever. And He said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” And it was agreed in the realm of the Great God that it should be so, to extend to this crowning creation the privilege and opportunity of sharing all of the capacities, the abilities, of the Great God Himself, that things Divine might be given a new form in a new realm wherein male and female in the form of man and woman might delight forever in the glorious freedom of Deity. Trusting this crowning creation implicitly and explicity, the Great God designed the whole creation to be a replica of the Heavenly State under the dominion of man, to the end that no necessary power should be denied to man, to the end that no possible joy should be kept from him, to the end that through the unending cycles of time and eternity the unfolding of the aspects of Truth might reveal the exquisite beauty of Divine Design and bring forth the reality of that Control necessary to the full and free enjoyment of Design, that Beauty and Love might bring forth Life Eternal, and that the Glory of the Great God might be made manifest on earth through man.
With the fulness of Love and Trust, and out of the heart of the bountiful Giver, these things were accomplished in a Design wherein the Great God kept no alternative path open, but, trusting His creation, anticipated that there would need to be no other avenue of Divine Control provided than man himself.
He trusted man with the whole of the creation,
not only in this world but with the balance of creation in the Solar System.
In the passage of time, however, there were those who were not content to share the Greatness and the Glory of the Great God, but determined in their hearts that they would be, in and of and for themselves, as great as the Great God Himself. So, man violated the Trust which the Great God had placed in him and he turned aside from the paths of righteousness and the uses of the Heavenly Design, seeking to improve thereon, and man brought ugliness and sordidness and suffering and sorrow, yea even death, into the world that had been brought forth in such exquisite beauty; and the full pattern of Divine Control was lost in the earth, and the substance of the earth and the things of the earth were denied the pleasure and the privilege of sharing in the beauty of that Divine Design. And while man refused to respond and refused to share the Greatness and the Glory of the Great God, the Great God was helpless, and there was no way by which He could fulfil the patterns of His creation except through man.
When man beheld, and saw the spectacle of the helplessness of the Great God, he said in his heart, “Now, though I am helpless in the earth, I have rendered the Great God helpless, and I have made Him to be of no effect in the realm of His own creation. And so it is that I am indeed as great as the Great God.” But the Great God was a God of Love, and it was not in His heart to destroy His creation, and it was not in His nature to say to Himself, “I have failed, and that which I undertook to do is impossible to Me.” So, for the sake of His creation and for the sake of His own Name, that it might be shown that the Great God could do that which He undertook to do, the Divine Design was caused to include a way and a means by which man could be restored to that Divine Estate from whence he had fallen.
The Great God said, to those who served Him well, “Even though it may appear, to those who dwell on earth and heed not the Word of Truth nor the Voice of Love, that I am a helpless God, and though thousands and tens of thousands may proclaim the idea that I am weak and far away, nevertheless, I shall be patient; for the words of arrogant men cannot change the Eternal Truth and I shall abide in that capacity of hope and faith which I vouchsafed unto man, faith that there shall be, in some generation, men and women who shall find no pleasure in the spectacle of a helpless God, men and women who shall aspire to be that for which I created them, men and women who shall vindicate my faith, men and women who shall show by their lives that my trust in my creation was not misplaced. In some season, in the cycles of time, in some generation of the children of men, there shall surely arise those who find no pleasure in the spectacle of the helpless God, and who will share with Me the joy of restoring to the Divine Estate this realm which I created, that it may be shown here and in the whole Cosmos that Love is greater than hate, that Faith is greater than fear, that Trust is greater than suspicion, that Light is greater than darkness, that Beauty is greater than ugliness, yea that Life is greater than death. And to this end I shall contain Myself in patience, working and waiting for the coming of those who shall trust My Trust, who shall love My Love, who shall have faith in My Faith, that they may come to know that which their forefathers have forgotten, that they may come to share that which their forefathers threw away, that it may be known in Heaven and earth that the Great God is not a helpless God but a God of Hope, that the Great God is not a weak God but a God of such sublime Strength that He can afford to wait. And I shall yet know the joy of seeing My creatures find the fulfilments that I designed for them. And I shall yet see the beauty of My creation to which I brought it forth.”
So it was that arrogant man continued to deem the Great God to be a helpless God, and he pointed with scorn to God and with pride to himself, saying, “See how great I am, for I have rendered God Himself helpless in this realm wherein I dwell.” But the Great God waited, and the Great God watched, and the Great God worked to shape and to mold, in the cycles of time, that man and that woman who should heed, those members of His crowning creation who should hearken, and listen, and respond.
But, with the passage of time, man in his arrogance forgot the Great God waiting in His Heaven, and man assumed that there was no Heaven. And so he made to himself concepts with respect to a heaven of his own making, and he caused his priests to declare unto the children of men that after they were dead they should surely come to the heaven of their choice. Therefore, the Great God said in His heart, “Man hath indeed forgotten Me and he hath forgotten the Heaven which I created for him, and the sufferings of men and their sorrows rise before Me, and I see their toils and their turmoils; I see their cruelty, their injustice, their inhumanity to man. I see all these things in the realm of My creation. And My heart is sad. And though I might well wait for untold eons of time, My creature shall surely destroy himself and shall never know the riches of treasure that await him, the joys and the pleasures that I have in store for him. My crowning creation hath dealt harshly with those whom I have sent into the world, and they have not remembered Me, nor have they turned from their evil ways to share with Me the creative joys. Therefore, now, I shall go, Myself, into the world, and I shall dwell among men, and I shall bring to their remembrance the reality of the Great God, and I shall teach men of the Kingdom of Heaven that is at hand, that they may be reminded of that which is lost, that their hope may be renewed in My Hope, that their faith may be established in My Faith. Yes, I, Myself, shall go into the world and dwell among men.”
So it was done, and the Great God was born in the body of a babe, to grow to the maturity of manhood, to live among men. And as He began to walk among men, and to teach them, and to reveal unto them the works of the Great God, there was a great stir among the people, and some said, “Here is a way by which we may get the things we want, a means by which we can gain our own ends. We will follow Him.” Others said, “Behold, we know not the means of His Power. Perchance He will stir the people up against us, and we will lose our power which we already have, and we will lose our riches which we have.”
And so, when the Great God came to walk among men on earth, the children of His crowning creation set themselves to destroy the Great God Himself, that they might say unto themselves, “Behold what we have done. For so long we held the Great God helpless so that He could not control in that which He claimed to be His own realm, but now we have gone to the heights of success, for we have not only rendered the Great God helpless, but we have slain Him. Behold, we have slain Him!” So, untold millions of people learned to believe that man had slain the Great God, and even though there were those who said that the Great God had come forth from death, He had left the world in defeat, and the Great God was slain, and the Great God was helpless, and the spectacle continued, with man's inhumanity to man mounting, with man's cruelty unleashed, with man's greed and sordid lust controlling around the globe.
And the Great God said unto Himself, “Surely, as I have waited in patience, having faith in My creation, and trusting, there shall be, in some generation soon at hand, the manifestation of men and women who shall hearken, men and women who shall find no pleasure in the spectacle of the helpless God, men and women who will not glory in the death of the Great God upon the cross, men and women who will say to themselves, ‘Behold, this state in which we find the world surely is not that for which it was designed. Let us arise and seek. Let us search far and near, that we may find and know a better way than man has yet known. Let us search with earnest hearts and sincere purpose. Perchance the Great God is not as helpless as He seems to be. Perchance He is not as far away as men proclaim. Perchance we might find favor in His eyes. And as He has Trusted for so long, so would we begin to trust in Him. As He has had Faith in man so long, so would we begin to have faith in the Great God.’”
And it was so. And they searched, and they found that a Way was, and is, provided, and that the Word of Truth can be known. They were shown the secrets of Power and the secrets of fulfilment, the nature of the Divine Purpose, and they were reminded of the coming of the Great God Himself among men. They were caused to meditate upon the words of the Great God which He had spoken on earth. And they began to see and to know the Love of the Great God. They began to recognize the Truth and to see the promise of Life. And they said unto themselves, “Let us put the Great God to a test. Let us see if we can, on earth, let the Power of the Great God have meaning.” And some said, “But the Power of the Great God cannot have greater meaning than the power of evil on earth. The power of evil is great. It is so well entrenched, and it is in the hearts of so many men and women, that the power of evil can hardly be overcome. We cannot really hope that the Power of the Great God is great enough for such a task as this. We do not believe that it can be done, at least not in our day. Let us wait. After we are dead and gone there will surely come a time when there will be the manifestation of the Power of the Great God. But not yet! We must let the power of evil continue. We must keep the Great God helpless yet a while. We must disappoint Him yet again. For is there not evidence of the great power of evil, evil so great that it cannot be well overcome, when this power renders helpless the Great God Himself?”
So, there were those who looked upon the spectacle of the helpless God, and passed by, and said, “Oh, Great God, we love Thee, but we cannot yet devote ourselves to this task. It is so great. And, after all, You are quite helpless here on earth. We must look to our own interests. We must not forget the necessities of our own living.” So they turned aside and followed after their own fancies, and said unto themselves, “Yet a little while, and no doubt the Great God will find a Way.” But they had forgotten that man himself was the Way by which Dominion might appear, and they did not stop to realize that their own helplessness should surely continue for as long as they rendered the Great God helpless.
But, at last, in a place set apart, there began to be a deeper vision still, and there were those who began to hope that such a thing could be. There were those who dared to let their faith be upon the Great God, that they should no longer have so much faith in the power of evil. But they had yet to learn that, in any moment when they yielded to self-centeredness, they were rendering the Great God helpless. They had yet to learn that they could not follow after their own desires and serve the Great God truly. They had yet to learn that if, in any moment, they became subject to the rebelliousness and the resentment and the fears of the realm of darkness, they once more rendered the Great God helpless! And they had to wait again, and see the sufferings of men and hear the cries of women and children who were subjected to the tortures of the cruel, the heartlessness of the mighty, the mighty who were so great that they could render the Great God helpless!
But with the passage of time, the eyes that saw only dimly began to heal, and they began to see more clearly, and they began to know that using their own life forces to render the Great God helpless was no point of glory, no cause for rejoicing. So, at last, the Great God could begin to see the beginning of the manifestation of that which was to be. And He said, “My waiting has not been in vain. My patience shall yet be rewarded. For surely in the cycles of time there are beginning to appear those men and those women who find no joy in the spectacle of the helpless God, men and women who shall arise and welcome the Great God back to the fulness of the uttermost parts of His realm, men and women who shall share the manifestation of the Power of the Great God, that the seeming power of evil may be brought to naught and that the arrogance of self-centered man may be revealed for what it is, until all who shall remain may rejoice in the privilege of sharing the Greatness of the Great God, of knowing the Love of the God of Love, of beholding the Beauty of the God of Truth, and of sharing the Life of the God of Life.”
And the Great God said, unto those who served with Him, and who had waited and worked so long, “And it shall be shown in the world, and in the Solar System, and in all the Cosmos, that God can do that which He undertakes to do, even though man stubbornly refuses for so long to share in the work of the Great God.” So it was that men and women began to know the reality of faith. They began to feel the fulness of hope, and they began to see the depth and the breadth and the height of their own responsibility before the Great God, unto all of the things and all of the substance of creation.
Herein we see the Path that leads to Victory, the Path which makes possible the vindication of the endless Love of the Great God Himself. So it is, and so shall it be, now and forever. “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” Aum-en. So it is that it shall be written in the history of the Cosmos that, “It is truly true that ‘With God all things are possible’—for God was able to save arrogant man from the foolishness of his own pride.”
