Dominion and the Hedge

Dominion  and  the  Hedge

Martin Exeter  November 1, 1987 pm

The illusory world not only must pass away but is in the process of doing so. I am reminded of the story of Job. At the point where the troubles really started for him, it was said that the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord and satan came also among them. Here was the seed of the troubles that were to ensue. The troubles came. The human mind had opportunity to follow out its own desires and determinations, so the troubles came. This is a very accurate portrayal of what has been happening in the world for a long time. The troubles came because of satan; that is the human mind creating its own world. It has been busy at this for ages. We are largely unaware of the various events out of the past when the human mind created particular worlds of which we now have no record. We know about this one and that’s perhaps enough. In each case of course in times past, whatever had been created passed away. So-called civilizations have come and gone. This present one is teetering on the brink.

The opportunity, however, is present to allow the mind to be used to create a real world rather than the unreal one which we now know. The mind is an instrument which can be used to create or to destroy. It is assumed that if one is mentally in a creative mode one is not at the same time destroying. The fact is that the mind, satan, interfering with the natural creative processes in order to gain its own ends, is not creating when it thinks it is but is in fact making sure of destruction. It may take a while. We ourselves, at least in the external sense as human beings, are the end product of a long period of satanic activity bringing us close to a final climax. Awakening somewhat to what it is that is happening, our minds, conscious and subconscious, may be made available to the true cause, so that the real world may be brought forth.

The true cause is the cause of the mind itself. The mind is simply an effect of another cause. The extent of its vision is therefore extremely limited and inevitably distorted if this other cause is ignored. Our concern has been to surrender the mind to the true cause, the cause which produced the mind in the first place. That cause produced the human mind for a reason. That reason has been long forgotten by the human mind, but there has been something of a reminder. It is said that the spirit of truth brings all things to remembrance. And we have been blessed to remember a little so that there might be an emergence, like in the story of Job, on the other end of all the stuff that is portrayed in the intervening chapters, the ridiculous arguments of Job’s friends. If you have had the dubious privilege of reading those chapters I am sure you will have been thoroughly bored. But you will have noted that the arguments that appear are very similar to all the talk that goes on in the world today.

One thing might immediately be learned: that no good thing, nothing of any value, came out of all that talk. This might well be applied to the state of affairs on earth now. Nothing is going to come out of all the talk, so you needn’t be so concerned about what is being said by the various friends who appear on the newscast, for instance. The answer doesn’t come out of all that talk, yet it seems that most people are wrapped up in what the various leaders, for instance, are saying to each other or to people in general, as though something creative was going to come out of it. It never will; it never could. Here is the mind of human beings completely unrelated to the cause of its existence. It discusses things that have no meaning whatsoever, but having poured considerable life force into all these efforts, these things seem to be big and important. Perhaps there will be a reduction in nuclear armaments—won’t that be wonderful? There are other ways of destruction also. Perhaps the least of the ways may be nuclear armaments. It is supposed that these have not been used because there was the fear of mutual destruction. This certainly indicates that if there wasn’t that fear they would have been used. Whatever it is in human beings that makes them behave this way still remains, and fear is in itself a destructive control.

There came a time when those who were talking so much to Job seemed to run out of steam. There was certainly a recognition on the part of Job that they weren’t saying anything. It is indicated that then the Lord spoke to Job out of the whirlwind. This is not exactly what occurred. We can see it, from our standpoint now, that Job provided a means by which the Lord could speak. How shall this Cause which, amongst many other things, created the human mind, speak? There is only one way: through the instrument that He created to speak. And so the Lord spoke out of the whirlwind because of Job, because there was someone to speak. There have been a lot of people who have cocked their ears in order to hear some word from God. And that has engendered a great deal of imagination but, in fact, no word from God! because the only way there may be speech from this original Cause is through the instrument that was created to speak.

I think human beings would be dumb, unable to speak, unless there was a reason for it. The reason for it has been long forgotten, and nothing but meaningless chatter has filled the earth ever since. But in this story of Job we have a story of mankind. We have seen this long interval in between the beginning of the story and the end of the story—many, many chapters of talk— and that’s what has been going on on earth for a long, long time. The human mind in its ignorance, not very blissful ignorance either, has imagined that something was being achieved by all this talk, which required thought of course. Some talk is backed by thought; a great deal isn’t. But thought was considered to be part of the process that was required. And knowledge has been multiplied, but the truth has been forgotten.

Now again we come to this hour, looking again at this story of Job. Original Cause spoke out of the whirlwind. This could occur because Job was on hand to do the talking, to speak; and the whirlwind relates to the creative process—the creative process which uplifts and also lowers down. We have some examples of whirlwinds in tornadoes. They do quite a bit of uplifting and slamming down again. These are deemed to be acts of God, when they are in fact evidences of the failure of man. They are not very good examples of this whirlwind of the creative process because this is very orderly. However it does raise up and lower down. There is integration, there is disintegration, related to the creative process. This occasion, when the word came out of the whirlwind because of Job, was at the conclusion of the era of talk. How wonderful if that conclusion was really at hand, so that there might cease to be all this racket on earth!

At this concluding point something very definite was said: “Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?” That’s a blanket statement that could cover the human race I think. Perhaps the word knowledge is not the right word. In this instance understanding would be better, because there is an immense amount of knowledge around, increasing all the time. The more knowledge there is, the worse affairs become. Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without understanding, without really knowing anything, entirely wrapped up in mental gymnastics for the achievement of human ends? And it may be that that achievement will be quite successful. It could end human beings.

Here is a statement finally emerging with authority relating to all the nonsense that has been going on on earth for so long: What in the hell do you think you’re doing?—it’s in the hell all right—if you’re so brilliant and intelligent, tell me where you were at the beginning of the creation when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy. Of course “the morning stars” relate to Lucifer, the mind of man in heaven where it belongs, rather than in hell. So this which is portrayed in these verses in the Book of Job can be recognized as an actual experience occurring now.

Our responsibility is to provide the means by which this original Cause can cause what is necessary now. This can only happen because there are those human beings present on earth who are not so wrapped up in the nonsense that their facilities may be offered in the expression of what is necessary. And if that is so, then what is the expression? “Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without understanding?” That has been said to us, hasn’t it? We have been busy at that in the past. Perhaps we’re beginning to emerge out of it, that there might be a facility on earth, not just of one person but of a body of people, through whom the word of original Cause may be spoken. Now when I say that, that is not just speech. It is the expression of original Cause, and that expression is describable as the radiance of spirit.

That radiance only appears when there is a mind still enough, and a heart also, to accommodate it. For that to happen one must shut up, stop the nonsense. To the extent that we have been willing to do this and actually did it, we know something of what that radiance is. We know it without being able to define it in mental terms. Immediately you think you are able to define something that is of spirit in mental terms, you lose the spirit. The spirit rightly brings forth such mental terms as may be necessary, but the mind, as we well know, can never encompass spirit. It can never observe or comprehend original Cause, but it can be the vehicle by which original Cause speaks the Word, sounds the Tone, releases the radiation, which gets the job done. Being unaccustomed to this, I am sure that there has been a feeling of uncertainty as to whether the job really would get done; and there has been a tendency remaining to try to manipulate things, at least a little.

We have seen this in terms of serving the King, of being available on earth as His ministers—responsible to the King, not responsible to any of the mind-made world (although we would behave as reasonably as is possible in that world), but being responsible to the King and administering the creative process, so that what finds expression comes out of the whirlwind. It doesn’t come out of the mind-made world. The mind-made world cannot be acceptable anymore as a cause for what we think or what we feel or what we say or what we do. It’s taken into account, yes, but we know where the cause is: in the whirlwind, in the creative process. We speak, we act, we think, we feel, out of the whirlwind; and that does something, not in the usual human manipulative ways, but it begins to reestablish, for one thing, a hedge on earth which previously was broken by satan. Lucifer fell into the earth and became satan and came also among the sons and daughters of God, and the results occurred. The hedge was broken and the troubles started.

The hedge must be reestablished. At the moment we don’t have much of a hedge. We have a little and we may be most thankful for the evidence of it that there has been, for there has been protection in many ways. But it isn’t just a matter of self-protection; it’s a matter of establishing dominion. If dominion is established there is nothing that can penetrate that. Dominion is possible because of original Cause, and when original Cause is accommodated in our minds then there begins to be a hedge, a hedge which protects what it is that is emerging into the world.

Who knows exactly what it is that is emerging into the world? I don’t think any of us would be so arrogant as to say we do. All we know is that what should emerge into the world is doing so, and we discover what it is as we go along. There is no preview of coming attractions. And we delight deliberately to be aligned with this creative process so that dominion may be reestablished in our own experience, dominion which extends into the world. The hedge was originally broken. The hedge is recreated. Are there times when you feel that disaster is knocking at your door, maybe a nameless disaster? Sometimes you can give it a form of some kind. Do you believe that? Do you have faith in disaster? Or is there a dawning awareness of the reality of dominion, so that finally there is no need to bolster anything up from an external source? We bolster things up now, and it’s wise perhaps that we do. We carry fire insurance, for instance.

But we have the responsibility of reestablishing dominion. That can’t be done as long as human beings are serving themselves. It isn’t self-protection in the human sense. It is a hedge which emerges through and surrounds the collective body of those whose minds are restored to true Cause, whose minds are again in heaven, out of which, by no means whatsoever, can they be dragged. If your mind justifies anything which can take you out of the heaven, well obviously you are not yet trustworthy. Let the mind be obedient to true Cause, and behold, dominion is then reestablished on earth. Those who are awake, or awakening, know this and behave accordingly.
