Fall of Babylon

Uranda   May 30, 1953  Class

Tonight let us meditate upon the basic principle which the Master expressed, “As ye sow, so also shall ye reap.” We have recognized that that which is done here constitutes an outworking in miniature, which establishes a vibratory current which reaches out into the world. Regardless of the nature of the function, others are inclined to do that which we do—if it be ill or if it be right. That which we do, others are inclined to do; the attitudes which we have, others are inclined to share, regardless of the nature of the attitude, and so we have a responsibility, individually and collectively, with respect to the sowing and the reaping; and the unreal, either in the individual or in the whole, must come to an end; not because God is going to destroy it, but because the unreal has within itself, the seeds of its own disintegration.

That which is unreal is not conforming to the pattern of Truth, only the Truth can endure and anything that is not patterned or designed in the Truth or in relationship to it must pass away by the weight of its own unreality. Human beings expend their life energies seeking to maintain the unreal, but finally they are crushed by the load which they carry, and under that load, they die—born into the earth to return to the dust from whence they came. Sometimes it seems to the limited vision of human beings that the world pattern of unreality is so firmly entrenched, so vast, so self-sustaining that somehow it might endure, that there is a possibility of its being maintained.

We do not have to fight against the unreal to cause it to crumble; we do, insofar as our influence may carry weight, seek to stop feeding the unreal, channeling the substances of life that should be directed to living into the patterns of sustaining the unreal. If we stop feeding it, it inevitably withers and dies because it has no life of its own. But tonight let us give consideration for a few moments to this pattern of the unreal as it exists in the world, carrying out, somewhat, the pattern of consideration as we shared it on Thursday evening. I would read to you from the eighteenth chapter of the Book of Revelation:

“And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen.” Now let us recognize that Babylon is the symbolical name for the unreal—unreality in any individual, in any home, in any group, in any state, in any nation, anywhere, any people; Babylon is the symbolical name of the unreal, whether in you or in Russia.

“And after these things I saw another angel come down from Heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon”—the unreal—“Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.” We have in times past considered unclean or evil spirits; considered them, the habitation of devils, and of every foul spirit, it is put here, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. Now birds, in the Bible, are used to symbolize thought or thought processes; thought, as such. Now, the realm of the unreal is fallen; we have recognized that. It has fallen far from its pattern of association with God and with the Kingdom of Heaven on earth.

“And is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins.”

“And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her” – the realm of unreality; come out of the realm of unreality, my people—“that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double. How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much sorrow and torment give her.”

Now, we remember in our previous meditations with respect to these things, the principle of self-centeredness, which causes human beings to glorify themselves, or to attempt to—“How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously” in the patterns of the unreal realm; “so much sorrow and torment give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.” We see the attitude in the realm of the unreal patterns of the world is here clearly and dramatically portrayed. “I sit a queen, and am no widow and shall see no sorrow. Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine.” Now in olden days it seemed like something fantastically impossible that such a thing might conceivably be so, but nowadays with atomic weapons and hydrogen bombs, long-range aircraft and suicidal pilots, it does not sound so fantastic. “Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine.”

Consider the problems of civil defense, for a moment. You know, I am a member of Civil Air Patrol, which is dedicated as an organization, a volunteer organization, to doing everything possible to limit danger to our country, but in the face of any emergency or catastrophe to do all in our power to alleviate human suffering and prevent the development of chaotic conditions. We are well aware of the possibilities of mass hysteria on the basis of fear. We recognize that atomic bombing could very quickly not just destroy food products, in the sense of causing them to vanish, but so contaminate them that they could not be safely eaten. An atomic bomb, and what do we have in one day? Death, and mourning, and famine. It is not so fantastic any more. And the whole program of Civil Defense, as it is worked out in our country carries the same determination to prevent suffering if possible, but in the face of catastrophe to meet the issue.

Psychologically, those of us who are vitally interested in Civil Defense, such programs as the Civil Air Patrol, recognize that we have a great problem—the people of our land are to a great extent lethargic in the face of definite possibilities, lethargic and unequipped, unprepared, and yet under a certain nervous strain, certain physical strain, etc., so that any adequate attempt to portray the dangers would produce fear reactions which would tend to defeat the purpose. There has to be a middle way. There is no desire on the part of those engaged in Civil Defense or Civil Air Patrol to engender fear, but there is a desire to engender an understanding of the basic problems which are inherent in the present world situation. But people have listened to radios for so long; for so long they have read sensational headlines that the words do not penetrate. The ideas, in any personal sense roll off like water from a duck's back. There is no particularized meaning in a personal sense, and this difficulty which is faced in the psychological sense is one which is being given a great deal of very serious and thoughtful consideration by many of the leaders of our land. How to meet the issue without destroying the possibility of effective function.

One of things, of course, upon which there is placed a great deal of dependence is the inherent capacity of Americans to rise to the occasion, to ignore the inevitable as long as possible, but when it drops down in their midst and they can ignore it no longer, to arise to the occasion—to start off balance, not to prepare and take it the easy natural, sensible way, but wait until there is an emergency and then, after the first flight of emotionalism, settle down, work hard to get balance, to achieve a starting point and rise to the occasion. Well, we’re thankful for that quality and yet, is it sensible to have such an attitude? We look at it on the national scale and we can see it. How about examining the same principle in relationship to ourselves here, with respect to the remnants of the unreal that may yet be present.

“For she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow. Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire.” Fire? It suggests something like atomic bombs. “For strong is the Lord God who judgeth her. And the kings of the earth who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning, Standing afar off for the fear of her torment.”

Now these words were written about 96 A.D. before anyone used the word atomic bomb, but could you find a better description? Standing afar off to keep out of the radioactive area. Standing afar off and lamenting when they shall see the smoke of her burning. It is not as fantastic as some people have imagined. “Standing afar off for the fear of her torment.” Not wanting to get into the area of radioactive contamination. "Saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come. And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more. The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble, And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.”

Now here, 96 A.D., we have a remarkable list of modern day items of commerce; covering the list, what is left out? What is left out? You say they do not mention automobiles or airplanes? What are they but chariots? You say they do not mention the petroleum industry? Oh, it does mention oil—all gasoline products. What is not mentioned? Notice, and notice that it is the pattern of the world as it is today. What is the primary point of merchandise? Gold. The shipments of gold between nations, that is the starting point. That is the first one listed—“The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner of vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass and iron and marble, And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.” Souls of men and women. There is the list, and it does not leave out very much once you stop and examine it.

“And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all. The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing, And saying, Alas, alas that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls! For in one hour so great riches is come to nought.” Now there is the death blow, the point that human beings in the realm of the unreal simply cannot comprehend, that great riches could come to nought. Oh, some business man may fail or some corporation go defunct, but riches—oh, riches are the thing. Riches, the god of riches. But here, “For in one hour so great riches is come to nought.” Could an atomic bomb bring such great riches to nought in one hour? This is no exaggeration.

“For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off, And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning.” International trade in other words—“and cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city! And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate. Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.” … “Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her. And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.”

And if there be any unreal in you, then you have a share in Babylon—the unreality of your own makeup, if there be any, represents your stock, your share in Babylon. “Thus with violence shall, that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all. And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee.” That takes care of the entertainment field pretty well, doesn’t it? “And no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be.” That covers a broad field. “And no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee; and the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee; for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.”

And so, the fall of the unreal world; but individually and collectively, we can let the unreal world fall, if we will, before it falls for the whole earth, and how much better it will be, if when Babylon starts to fall in the world, you do not find it falling within yourself. Let us not imagine that the unreal realm of Babylon is stable or sure or certain. It is sure and certain that it shall fall. But let us let the roots and the rootlets of Babylon fall from our realms of function and living, and then let us look at the contrast, after these things; and that is for individuals or for the world, after Babylon has fallen in you, individually, after Babylon has been cleared out of you as a group, after Babylon has fallen in anyone, anywhere.

“And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying”—in Heaven, where? On earth; not up in the sky. I heard the voice of much people in Heaven on earth, "Saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God: For true and righteous are his judgments; for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand. And again they said, Alleluia ... And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia. And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great. And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth….”

“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.”—the fulfilment of the pattern of reality, the realm of reality coming down from God out of Heaven. Where? Into the earth, individually and collectively and for the whole.

“And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new.” … “Behold I make all things new.”

“And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree or life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.”—signifying the level of consciousness—“And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.”

“And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done. Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.” … “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. I have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things.” ... “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. Let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” And we know that the water of life is the Truth of reality.

I trust that this review, in brief outline of some of the basic factors which confront us in the world, may cause you to remember that we are not here to please ourselves, not here to play children’s games, but to serve God and man. This has been Memorial Day, when human beings pause to remember those who have gone on, particularly those whose lives have been snuffed out in the battles of the past in war, and we thank God for those men and women who so stood, that we might have the degree of freedom which we have today, that we might have this opportunity; but if there be a memorial, for whom shall it stand and where? Is it not better that the memorial should be for our Lord and King, who likewise walked on earth and faced death unflinchingly? If we have a memorial for Him, do we not have a memorial for every man, woman and child who has braved the battlefronts of the world, the tyranny, the hard-heartedness of the world, the shortcomings, the ignorance of the world? If we have a memorial for Him, do we not have a memorial for all? And where should that memorial be but in our hearts, and if it be in our hearts, shall we not by word and deed, yea, by living, reveal it, that it may be seen of men; that there may be a light to dispel darkness, a living example of reality, to inspire those who would come out of the unreal patterns of Babylon into the Kingdom of Heaven at hand. What shall be, yea, what is the case with you?

The Origin Of Fear

The  Origin  Of  Fear

Martin Exeter   December 20, 1981

Mankind as a whole has been in attunement with what is present in the mass consciousness, moved in various ways on this basis. There should be those who are in position to give the body of mankind an attunement, to move it out of attunement with what is present in that mass consciousness, into attunement with the Word.

For an attunement with the true state to be provided there must be those, even if it is only half a dozen people to begin with, who themselves reveal the fact of that true attunement. Then the change in polarity can begin to take place. It hasn't taken place heretofore because there were not even half a dozen people to provide what was necessary. We are concerned that there should be considerably more than six people, but it requires that those concerned have themselves experienced the true attunement. The real attunement is in the matter of living.

The Lord is calling, “Come out of her, my people.” How is the Lord going to call? The invitation is offered because there are those on earth in position to offer it, to speak the words, “Come out of her, my people.” We may easily see this as our responsibility now: to let these words be spoken by reason of the state of our being here. This state rightly reveals the fact of attunement with the Word, so that we are moved in our thoughts, in our feelings, in our words and actions, by the Word—our whole lives are an expression of the Word. If this is so, the invitation is extended, “Come out of her, my people.” Attunement is offered. There is something to which human beings can become attuned other than the dragon.

This Word comes because we ourselves presently experience the true attunement, which means that we are capable of handling what arises by reason of the dragon, what comes within the range of our own immediate experience.

Where does fear come from? There have been those who have sought to pin it on some past events: the violent cataclysms that have occurred on earth, the memory of which is present in the mass consciousness but suppressed. That must have been a very fearful experience for those who were on hand for it; scarcely any survived. That particular reason for fear has been hidden away. Immanuel Velikovsky unearthed it, much to the consternation of many people, who reacted violently, perhaps reminding them of something which they preferred to forget by using the elaborate theories that had been developed to make it seem as though there was nothing fearful to remember out of the past. Even in a short human lifetime I can look back upon events which were cause for fear: fearful events, perhaps not so horrendous as the cataclysms which affected the whole earth but nevertheless there were factors of fear.

Whenever fear does show up in human experience there is an endeavor to explain it away, to give it a form of some kind, a body, to say, “I'm afraid because of this or that.” But quite often fears arise where there is nothing that you can pin it on. Did you ever have the sensation of fear and you looked around and you couldn't find anything that you could immediately be afraid of, and yet the fear was there? Where did it come from? Well it came up out of the subconscious levels.

From the psychiatric standpoint the usual approach is gradually to bring it out into the open so it may be looked at and if possible relived, so that then it goes away. That may be all right, up to a point, but you haven't really got back yet to the origination of the fear. After all, even these cataclysmic events were brought to pass by reason of something else. It wasn't just by chance that these things happened.

We are aware of causative factors that go back beyond those events, causative factors which were initiated by human beings. It doesn't help all that much to uncover these violent cataclysms that may have occurred in the past if one stops there. Each individual is a part of the body of mankind and the body of mankind has been responsible. We can't extract ourselves from the body of mankind and stand over there somewhere and say, “I'm white as snow; no sin attaches to me.” One can't escape it; one is a part of the body of mankind which failed back along the way, and so the consequences appeared. And some of those consequences were really very violent, in and of themselves cause for great fear. But do you think human beings weren't afraid before that? Of course they were.

The story of the fall is rather accurate when it is said that Adam and Eve hid behind the trees when the Lord came walking in the cool of the day: “Where art thou?” “I was afraid.” There is the origination of the fear. He wasn't afraid of events that had not yet occurred. At that point Adam and Eve had not been put out of the garden. The fear related to something much deeper than external events. It related to a failure to maintain attunement with the Word. This is what introduced fear. It didn't exist in the experience of man before that point. So the fear that has to be faced is not the fear of externals but the fear which resulted from the failure to maintain attunement with the Word. That fear obviously is very present with each individual now, because individually speaking no one has maintained attunement with the Word. So there is fear, and human beings look around for a body to clothe it with, to avoid facing what the fear really is, where it originated; and all kinds of bodies have been found. It is their continued failure to allow attunement with the Word to be restored that brings all the seemingly valid reasons for fear, none of which are the true reason for the fear.

As long as human beings are controlled by fear they are attuned with the dragon, and manipulation from the mass unconscious occurs with everybody. We could never get rid of the fear on the psychiatrist's couch simply by remembering some fearful event. The fear was present before the event. It is an inherent factor in earthly heredity, stemming from that original occasion when attunement with the Word was lost and there came an awareness of an indefinable result. To this very day most human beings are afraid of ghosts. But the fear of the unknown, the unknown which was the origination point of that fear, has been so deeply buried that it has remained hidden. And even if there were those who did come along and begin to unearth it, they were quickly disposed of. Very irrational, but that is the way human beings act.

The real trauma of human experience was the loss of attunement with the Word, the loss of meaning, so that, ever since, human beings have been trying to create meaning for themselves, because they didn't have any. In the core of themselves there was no meaning, just emptiness, because the attunement with the Word was gone—indeed a fearful experience. Now we are being reminded of it. Finally it comes back into focus, so that we know the origination of the fears that arise within the range of our own awareness. We can't be fooled anymore by the bodies that it has been customary to place upon the fear. Awakening to oneness. It's about as close as you could get to the necessity of awakening to fear, the reason for it, the reason why it has been introduced into human experience when originally it wasn't there at all.

We need to go back beyond these horrendous events that occurred in the past to where the cause of those events originated. This gives indication of the tremendous responsibility that man originally had. We could hardly imagine in these days that the things that human beings do would disrupt the solar system. However, human beings have gotten themselves to the point where they can indeed disrupt the earth; one might say, blow it apart. They have created a cataclysm, or a potential one at least, which is going to absolve them from their fears and their guilts. There wouldn't be anyone around to have any fear or guilt anymore. And it would indeed be a disrupting element in the solar system, something that would affect the other bodies in the solar system. It can happen. And human beings have been so brilliant that they have been able to devise a means of making it happen, deliberately making it happen. Extraordinary, isn't it?—absolutely irrational, all stemming from this original point where the attunement with the Word was lost. Now we are here to let it be restored.

We need to have a certain awareness of what happened, so that we can deal with the fears that arise within the range of our own awareness. The sense of fear is the factor that is present which needs to be faced. Would it not be possible just to do the right thing without fear? There is a need to come to grips with the origin of fear, the origin of any of these destructive elements which take control of human lives. They all stem from the same point. Knowing this, we see these things rising up because they are present in the mass unconscious and put in an appearance.

There is something to be handled right here where we are, where the experience arises. Where else are we going to handle it? The only events which will prove to be constructive are those which arise by reason of the fact that the Word is spoken because there are those who are attuned with the Word on earth. That is the only point of origination for anything constructive. There isn't any other! There is nothing that anybody can do as dupes of the dragon which is constructive. It is not possible.

The only constructive causes spring out of the Word, and the Word needs to be spoken for those constructive causes to be present in the world. So we have this awareness of responsibility, but it is such a simple thing because it relates to things as they are all around us immediately. We can handle events out there by handling the causes of events right here. Unless we come to grips with this, we are useless. It is what rises up in one's own experience that is to be handled rightly, handled by the Word, by the creative expression of the spirit of God.

It is much better not to look too far into the future but be open to receive what is coming now—that is the only thing that has to be dealt with—so that we are not compelled by the dragon in our behavior at all. We are simply the compulsion of the Word on earth, which is quite capable of dealing with what arises. If we do handle what we are capable of handling in the moment, and in the next moment, and the next moment, we'll never find ourselves out on a limb.

The Spirit of Truth calls all things to remembrance. We remember again and we are capable of dealing with the fears that arise. The Word is known. Let it be spoken. We may use to advantage what are seemingly most of the time rather insignificant affairs, because within those insignificant affairs the awareness of various feeling reactions arises, and that is where we deal with them. It's easy, very close.

God's Atomic Bomb

from

God's  Atomic  Bomb

Uranda   August 26, 1945

The family of Nations in the allied cause gave all their scientific resources to finding a means of utilizing atomic energy. Under the stress of war, scientists were brought together from many nations, facilities were made available, millions of dollars were spent in construction—money did not matter. Under the ordinary circumstances in peace time, do you think that anyone would have put up those billions of dollars to back the research as in war? No. It means that under the stress of war the scientific resources were focalized, brought together, for one purpose and that purpose was, in a sense at least, achieved. That which has been called the atomic bomb was produced.

Now man, in a prodigious effort by many nations, has reached out, as it were, into the future, to produce something that in the normal course of events would not have been discovered for many years. Under ordinary circumstances there would not have been money enough, and the scientists would not have worked together. I cannot say how long it would have been but let us say about 100 years in the ordinary course of scientific progress, but it was needed for war as a means of destruction. We have heard the scientists talking about utilizing their findings for peacetime purposes and no doubt there are many efforts being made along that line. We may say that we have retained the secret for ourselves but the scientific facts are known and it will not take long for other nations to discover it.

We cannot guarantee that that secret will always be under the control of God-fearing men and used only for righteous purposes. That means, then, that the world of man has achieved something that is, in a sense, away ahead of this hour, this day, and that places a responsibility on every man, woman, and child, and especially Christians, to catch up with that discovery in a Spiritual sense. In other words, it means, more than ever before, that man must not go to sleep; he must not say: "Well, we will leave responsibility for world peace to the President and others," so that he forgets his responsibilities and begins to get lost in what he wants, and in things he would like to do, so that he makes the same mistakes that we made after the first world war when Christians forgot to pay attention to the things of God and to pray for peace.

If we are going to be able to shoulder the tremendous responsibility that rests upon us because of these discoveries, it means that morally and spiritually we must grow; we must continue to stand firm, continue to support the forces of righteousness so that the forces of evil cannot slip in at the back door, so to speak, and spoil everything, and plunge us into another terrible conflict. Whether we like it or not there is going to be another conflict unless Christians have peace in their hearts, unless they pray and work to maintain peace and righteousness and to support those who are in places of authority. I feel that we have a man truly called of God in the place of the Presidency of our Country at the present time, but there is no guarantee that he will always stay steady because there is no guarantee of anything about the human expression. The only right way is for Spiritual leadership to dominate in all Christian nations, and do not let us say that this does not matter to us.

Now let us look at another story—a story about a world, beautiful and glorious, a world created by a perfect God and peopled by those whom He had created after His own image and likeness, but who by reason of disobedience plunged into sin, suffering, sorrow and death. After a time the Lord raised up a people to represent Him in the earth but before long the people of that nation became so engrossed in the things of their own individual lives, they became so indifferent to the efforts of those who sought to do the right thing, that they did not support the movement according to the plan. They forgot to watch and pray, and forgot to give heed to their Spiritual lives. The nation split in two and scattered over all the earth. (That is what happens in the atomic bomb—it splits in two and scatters. Because human beings did not follow the way, the plan and the Will of God, the children of Israel failed. Today we have a greater calling, a greater responsibility than has rested on any people at any time in all history. There is a greater necessity that we watch and pray than at any time in the past.)

Let us continue with that story. Darkness came over the world, there were captivities, difficulties arose and it looked as though God had forsaken the world. There was no way, no light, the world was in darkness as in the beginning. Then, a Babe was born—it made all the difference in the world because a Babe was born. He grew and waxed strong in the Lord and at the age of about thirty years He began to Minister to His people. He called His disciples, He talked in the synagogues, He spoke of the things of God, He pronounced woe upon the scribes and Pharisees and hypocrites, and drove the money changers from the temple, telling them that they had made His House a den of thieves. He called the sinners to repentance, and revealed that He had power in God to forgive sins. He healed them in body, in mind and in Spirit, and gave those associated with Him the most glorious opportunity that has ever come to human beings in this world.

Do you suppose that if you and I had lived then we would have followed Him just for the loaves and the fishes? Do you think that we would have been so quick to forget and turn aside? I wonder. And so the multitudes that had acclaimed Him scattered. They were no longer present. They had called "Hosanna!" before Him, and now when He was in trouble they did not show up. And the Master of us all stood before human judges, suffered indignities, was spat upon, and a crown of thorns was placed upon His brow. The people were offered a choice between His release and the release of a criminal. They said, "Release the criminal!" They cried, "Crucify Him!"

Let us not be quick to judge those back there. Let us remember that we here tonight face the same tests, the same necessities to stay faithful and true, to stand steadfast instead of ignoring our opportunities and privileges.

And then they made Him carry His own cross until He fell under the weight of it and a certain one was called and he carried it for the Master. Sometimes I think, Blessed Ones, that of all those who served according to the Biblical record, the one I would have rather been than any other was the one who carried the cross. That is one of the most beautiful and glorious incidents in the Bible, and yet there is not much space given to it. A certain one carried the cross for Him to Golgotha, the place of the skull, and there they crucified Him. Darkness came and covered the earth; there was lightning and thunder, and when they had crucified Him the veil of the temple was rent in twain. Man already staggering under a load of guilt, man having already proven through the centuries that he was not a true child of God, had placed upon himself the final black mark—man had crucified the Son of God! And yet in that very thing, in that very step by which human beings thought to be supreme, they defeated themselves. There were those who were faithful enough to place His body in the tomb, and Jesus was faithful and true, and He came forth from the tomb according to the promise. The stone was rolled away and He rose again and defeat was changed to victory—a victory in which every man, woman and child is invited to share.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." "God so loved the world"—that Love, that Divine Fire of Love that has been present down through all these centuries, has remained in the world as a Light to the children of men, as a promise of the Way of God, as an assurance to those who dare to accept the promise. And what do we find? We find that human beings in their efforts to fight against God in the game of life invariably do those things by which God gains the victory; for evil human beings always play into the Hands of God.

Man thought to gain the victory over God when he crucified Jesus, but he did not. All the way down through the ages we find that man has done things in order to be as great as God, according to the promise of the serpent in the Garden when man fell. The serpent said that when man ate of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil he would be as God. God said that when man attempted to use knowledge according to his own ideas he would destroy himself and die. Century after century and generation after generation, God's word has proven to be true. Generation after generation has come into the world saying, "Well, we will still gain the victory over God and still prove that we can do as we please and have things the way we want them whether God likes it or not." Those generations which have neglected God in a world-wide sense have passed away; once again, God's word has proven true.

What is the force of this atomic bomb that man uses today? The atom has a positive center, a positive nucleus called a proton and when by bombardment of the neutrons that positive center is split in two, two positives repel each other. That principle is known in electricity and operates all through the universe. In the atomic bomb, man has not used a hundredth part of its potential energies. All he has done is split it in two.

Atoms are constructed like solar systems. The positive center, or proton, is surrounded by one or more electrons. That is the secret which operates all through the elements—ninety-two of them. In uranium, which is the ninety-second element, we have what may be spoken of as the outer fringe classification. This process of breaking down has been going on all the time; man did not cause it to be; he simply discovered something that was already taking place in nature and has been going on all through the centuries. He simply discovered that he could utilize the process that is present in nature.

I am not belittling the efforts of man but only pointing out that this accomplishment is something in which man has not gained control over the atom. Man has only discovered a process in nature which has been taking place continuously. The process in nature relates to the source of light, to the source of life; it relates to the creative processes; it relates to the method by which God permits life to manifest on this planet. Man utilizes this process that has been taking place all the time, and uses it to destroy life. God is using what we may properly call atomic energy in the Cosmic Rays coming into the earth. The earth is being bombarded by alpha particles, or Cosmic Rays, and those Rays from the sun are part of the process of nature by which we have life, by which heat is produced and by which we are privileged to know that there is a God.

If we, as a world, if we as a people, are to avoid destroying ourselves with the atomic bomb and the developments of the atomic bomb, we, as a world, as Christian peoples, will have to live the Christian life more fully and with much more earnest zeal than we have ever done before. According to the Book, the world of man is going to be destroyed by Fire. We read here in Peter: "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up."

The things of man that are contrary to the Way of God are going to come to an end. Did you ever read a more effective description of what the results of the atomic bomb would be than what we have read here? You will remember that the scientists said that a steel tower simply vaporized. You also know something of the results of the bomb in Japan. "...in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat..." The Bible says the "elements," and so the Bible speaks of the atomic bomb because it is the same process. "...the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up."

We, as Christians, must face the fact that only in the Way of Christ, only as we remember to remember the Babe that was born into the world, the Babe that was finally crucified upon the cross, only as we remember that which took place and its relationship to ourselves, only as we remember our responsibility as Christians can we hope to be avoid being burned in the Fire, whether we like it or not.

The atomic bomb is a Divine warning to the world that the world had better repent, that the world had better turn to God, that the world had better live up to the Call of Jesus Christ, so that that which was made manifest in Japan will not be made manifest for us. My brother, my sister, this is not something to just talk about on Sunday and then forget the rest of the week. It is a challenge to every Christian, wherever we are. Sometimes we say, "But I stand alone and there does not seem very much that I can do." Or perhaps we say: "But there are so few in number." Blessed Ones, who stood alone at the cross? Suppose He had said, "Here I am alone. The people I came to save have all turned away; they have rejected Me and condemned Me and it is not worthwhile standing alone." If that had happened we would not have had an opportunity to stand alone, or with anyone else. So it does not make any difference whether we are alone, or what other people are doing. Because someone else does not do anything that is no excuse for us.

Excuses of any kind are going to look pretty thin and meaningless when we come face to face with the Lord. Just how many excuses could you offer to the Lord, looking Him straight in the eye? I wonder. No, that will not be a day for excuses. And so, each must choose for himself; and each must answer to the Lord for himself.

God's atomic bomb is going to destroy the world of evil and if we are a part of that world of evil, it will be the finish for us. Let us be a part of the new world that is to be, that New Paradise, that New Earth made manifest, where we may know the Joy of living with the Lord, that we may know the Joy of everlasting Peace, and that we may know what it means to have left behind war and misery and suffering, sorrow and death. There is a certain and sure promise here for each and every one of us. "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away."
