A Cosmic View Of The Price Of Progress

A  Cosmic  View  Of  The  Price  Of  Progress

Uranda   April 18, 1948   Gabilan Ranch,  Salinas, California

The converging lines of force that come to a focus tonight suggest that we might well consider a subject we have touched upon before; but the necessities of consideration in this focalization as it appears tonight require that we view this matter with a high degree of impersonality, to let comprehension become aware of a vast scope of meaning without allowing personal reactions or concerns to enter therein. This particular consideration we might classify as A Cosmic View of the Price of Progress.

We recognize the movement of irresistible force. We recognize the existence of a Cosmic Plan, and that that Plan is not subject to change by man's actions or reactions. It is not influenced by man's fancy or belief or desire. The imperious nature of the Divine Decree, dimly recognized without understanding, appears to be that which is called fate. Some, dimly recognizing my expression of the fundamental, basic factors of reality which are not subject to change according to man's desire or idea, have interpreted my attitude on a basis of personal action or reaction, and conceived my expression or function to be arbitrary. There have been times when it has appeared to some that I have functioned with a high disregard of the personal element, or of human beings as such. Such a criticism or judgment is, in my estimation, false; and yet, with respect to the particular recognition that is essential in this hour, it must be mentioned as a means of assisting the focalization of consciousness to a perspective vision of our subject. We recognize the Price of Progress from the standpoint of the individual, and we have considered it in times past; and we recognize it with respect to the development of spiritual understanding, and spiritual progress made manifest in the world — but tonight, the emphasis rests in the field of progress for the world as a whole, to consider the world-body of humanity as a unit.

This consideration does not disregard the sacredness of the individual human life, although, interpreted from some narrow or prejudiced state of consciousness, it might appear that individuality and the sacredness of the individual life are being ignored. You have a background of recognition, from the standpoint of the teaching of the Third Sacred School, which emphasizes the reality of individuality, the necessity of individual progress, and the sanctity of human life. It is important that that point be firmly fixed in consciousness, for that which I would say tonight does not deny these things. Each individual is inclined to look at the expression of life primarily from the standpoint of his own life span as a human being, his own experience, his own progress — and these things must be considered — but from the standpoint of unified consciousness in the Unit, there must come a recognition that transcends such a level of consideration, at times at least, so that the consideration may be comprehensive enough to view the world-body as a whole.

Considering the developments in the world up to this time, we may take certain specific phases of outworking with respect to war or pestilence, and, disregarding the human elements, the machinations of human minds, disregarding the greed and the traitorous conduct by which human beings sell their own countrymen into a state of war and slaughter, we recognize that these things have worked out as pressure points in the fulfilment of the whole, and that certain results, certain outworkings, were essential, one way or another, and if they did not appear in the world-body by means of the easy way of harmonization with the currents of the Pattern outworking, then they came, regardless of the rebellions in the hearts of men, the hard way — and, in warfare for instance, human life becomes, in one sense, cheap. Certain outworkings have come in the world, one way or another — usually, in this world, the hard way — but my point is that they come, regardless of the cost.

To illustrate in another way, we could look back to the time of the development of the railroads in this country in the early days, how immigrants came into this country by the boatload and became, primarily, laborers in the construction gangs building railroads. Those men, taken out of what had been their homeland and brought here, received little for their labors but they labored under the most rigorous conditions, at the hardest possible manual labor. By the tens of thousands they gave their very lives, that the railroads might be built. I think one could say that there is hardly a mile of railroad in this country that does not represent the tombstone of some man. A country was growing; the railroads were being built. The necessity of the railroads, from the standpoint of the national growth, is evident enough — and yet it could be classified on the basis of the greed of the railroad companies themselves, although it could not be kept in that sphere entirely, for, if the conditions in the country had not required the railroads there would have been no profit in such function to the railroad companies. The point is that the outworking in this country, for which no single individual could be held responsible, required the development of those railroads, and they were built; and, as a result, tens of thousands of men gave their very life-blood to that building. When the railroads were first coming across the plains, in that terrific struggle, life was, in one sense, cheap.

Again, we consider the opening up and development of this new country. Somehow, the work must be done, not only by immigrants from Europe, but slaves from Africa — thousands upon thousands of them, rooted out of their natural environments, chained and carried across the ocean and sold upon the auction block; human beings, though their skin was dark, human beings captured and sold, bought and sold like cattle, that the development of the country might be a reality — whole life spans, not just a few, but by tens of thousands, and so part of that price was the blood of uncounted negro men, women and children. Let us go further back in history for a moment. You can examine the growth and development of the Spanish Empire, which placed its mark upon the world and wrought certain changes. One could dwell long, in this regard, upon the galley slaves, or one could carry the story to South America and consider the treachery, the manner in which untold numbers of those who were members of an ancient civilization were slaughtered. A change was coming; new worlds were opening up; there was movement toward a oneness of the world, and if that oneness could not come the easy way, nevertheless the oneness of the world must come — and so untold thousands died, and in that day, under that Spanish program, human life, in one sense, was cheap. Did the Spanish Empire gain, itself, by reason of its dastardly deeds? It did not. It came to an end. Nevertheless, regardless of that, regardless of the fact that it forfeited any right to share in that outworking of fulfilment, it had a part therein.

Consider the British Empire. One might talk all night with respect to that historical outworking, naming instance after instance, showing that when, under world conditions, an empire was growing, and those channels were being opened up by which a world was being united, human life, in one sense, was cheap. If the instrument of accomplishment used the power wrongly, and was unworthy, as we have noted particularly with the Spanish Empire, the power was taken away, but that is beside the point. The point is that, by some instrumentality, one way or another, the result was achieved from the standpoint of the whole. Regardless of the price in human life, these things have been working out, moving irresistibly toward a unified world in an outer sense. We could go back through the whole range of history. We could talk about Babylonian Empires. We could talk about the Roman Empire. In all of these developments, in all of these progressive movements, which have marked the world so definitely, and have played so definite a part in that which now is, the results with respect to the whole were achieved, regardless of the cost in human life, regardless of who suffered, and regardless of who died. In all of these gigantic outworkings there have been untold instances where, in one sense, human life was cheap. We could carry it into the development of what is today called Christianity. Recognizing the persecutions of the early Christian period particularly — and numerous others on down through the centuries could be noted — perhaps one of the high points that was, in fact, a low point, was reached when, it is said, Nero lighted his garden, to please his guests and make possible their revelry in the night, by burning Christians alive — and, in one sense, human life was cheap.

Regardless of man's failure as a whole to comprehend the Divine Plan or the Divine Pattern, regardless of man's refusal to be obedient to the Divine Will, the imperious nature of the Divine Decree has never been successfully ignored, because the results have been obtained, step by step, surely, regardless of the cost in human life. That Cosmic Plan is still unfolding. The Law is, as we have noted, absolute. The results to be obtained are definite. Movement of the world toward that Goal is certain and sure. The world will move to that Goal, one way or another, either by the easy way of harmonizing with the Divine Currents, the Divine Pattern, or else by the hard way. When it came to a test in the outworking of things, an atom bomb was dropped over Hiroshima, and, in one sense, life — human life — was cheap. If that action had not been taken, some have argued that thousands of American soldiers would have had to die. One way or another, it is argued, human beings were going to die, and it was better this way than that. In any event, regardless of arguments, an atom bomb exploded, and in a moment a hundred thousand human beings ceased to live and breathe and walk upon the earth. The world is moving along a course which might, conceivably, at almost any time, cause other atom bombs to be unleashed — not just one or two, but many. If human beings, as they now are, do not coordinate sufficiently with that Pattern that is outworking to let the fulfilment appear the easy way, then it will be the hard way. It appears that it would be so easy for the leaders of nations to be sensible, for them to sit down and consider and to talk about their problems, to be honest with one another, and fair, so that each could trust the other, and a satisfactory arrangement might be developed; but it does not seem that human beings are going to take such an easy, natural way in working out a solution to their problems, and, sooner or later, if they do not take such a course, missiles of terrible destruction will be let loose, and life — human life — in one sense, will be cheap.

Progress — the progress of what? Looked at from the narrow standpoint, in those early day's, those men were dying for the progress of a railroad, but it was not for the progress of a railroad only — it was for the progress of a nation; and it was not for the progress of a nation only — it was for the progress of the world, that those men died. Could any undertake to look back in the range of history and say, “It were better if this nation or that, which came to a point of supremacy, had never existed.”? Would it have been better if there had never been any Babylonian Empires? Would it have been better if there had never been a Roman Empire? Would it have been better if there had never been a Spanish Empire? No. Regardless of the millions of lives that have been sacrificed in this progressive outworking with respect to the world as a whole, no one can say that, with human beings being what they are, we would be this near the Goal if those Empires never existed. The broad view allows true recognition as you admit that, regardless of the suffering, regardless of anything, all of these cycles — the rise and fall of empires — have had a part toward carrying forward the progress of the world to the point where we now are, to the point where we are privileged to sit here in a peaceful community and consider the things of reality at this level of consciousness.

Regardless of all the sacrifices and suffering of the past, human beings apparently are still not convinced of the imperious nature of the Divine Decree. They still think that they can get their own human ways, accomplish their own human purposes, and follow their own foolish fancies. They may seem to for a little time; they may think they are getting something by their bickering and their quarrelling, by their conduct that re-enacts on earth the first great crime when Cain slew his brother Abel — but it matters not. They will not gain their ends; in fact, there will be no permanency to their accomplishments except as they let themselves share in the outworking of the Cosmic Plan. There is One Plan that supercedes all other plans — there is a Force that is irresistible, and a Law that is absolute — and these things are working, moving forward, and there is progress, either with the willing help and cooperation of human beings or in spite of human beings. There is progress. Progress there is, and there must be!

We consider the outworking of Law in the realm of nature. A given end becomes essential; a given fulfilment becomes necessary. Whether it be in the field of plant life, in the field of insect life, or in the animal kingdom, the numbers of those things which must die in the outworking of the given fulfilment does not give nature pause for one moment. If it be a specie that must pass away, it is done. Nature is given to profusion, causing that which is required in the moment to appear in abundance, but in another moment something else appears, and that which was first profusely made manifest is sacrificed and done away with. Always, it is working out to a balance. If one type of insect becomes too numerous, some other type of insect, or condition, arises which brings a balance. Wherever anything tends to get seriously out of balance, something happens to force the balance to reappear, always on a higher scale, always moving forward.

Regardless of that which may appear for the moment, regardless of what may appear as terrible destruction, when the balance comes it becomes evident that, from the standpoint of the whole, there has been movement forward. We have the outworking to this point. Generations have lived and died, and even though they lived out their three score years and ten, they still died. They gave their lives. Whether upon the battlefield in youth, or through the span of life, they gave their lives, generation after generation, that a purpose might be served, that the world might progress, that a Goal might be achieved; and, whether human beings like it or not, they either help toward that fulfilment or they are wiped out. Or it may be that in the very fact that they are destroyed they help toward that fulfilment, as, for instance, in warfare — and by this I do not mean that warfare must come. It does not have to be the hard way unless human beings, as a whole, choose that it shall be so.

A Cosmic View Of The Price Of Progress, then, carries us to a point where we may comprehend the fact that the outworking is so certain, the fulfilment so sure, the progress so essential, that it matters not how many generations may live and die, or how many tens of thousands, or how many millions, may be wiped out by warfare or pestilence or any other thing — the price is not prohibitive. The price that is required does not prevent the progress. The progress is certain. Either human beings work with those currents of progress and share in the blessings, or they become unwilling instruments of progress, even though it shall mean that their lives are cut short. They may be ignorant of the part they play, from the standpoint of their own vision, and in the eyes of their neighbors their lives may seem to be meaningless, or to have come to some sad end that accomplishes little or nothing, but lives do accomplish something. Every individual life has meaning. The sanctity of individual life is a reality, and each individual, one way or another, willingly or unwillingly, is an instrument of progress. If unwillingly, then there is no credit to that individual, but the price that is paid by humanity itself is never so great that it prevents progress. The absolute nature of the progress, the absolute necessity of it, makes any price cheap. Yet, we would that all individuals should become so aware of the Law, and of the outworking of the Divine Pattern, that they would harmonize consciously, participate joyously, and share in the freedom of reality, that they might share in the rewards of progress, and live, and not die.

In the outworking of world patterns, the time comes when old forms must pass away — an empire is wiped out, nations are brought low, old customs and patterns of idea, habits, national or world-wide, must be changed. Somehow they will be changed. No matter how many lives must be sacrificed, no matter how many tens of thousands must suffer, because of rebellion against change, still changes come! If the new idea essential to the certainty of progress is not readily accepted, then the old idea that is crystallized, and to which human beings cling, must be broken down and destroyed, even though it means the breaking down and destroying of lives, young or old, the breaking down of one person or of a nation. The progress of the whole body of humanity is essential, the progress of the outworking of the Divine Pattern by which humanity as a whole may be blest. Then we see that, regardless of the sanctity of human life, human life is, in one sense, cheap, and will continue to be so until human beings learn — until some remnant of human beings learns to let God's Will be done on earth as it is in Heaven

All of this consideration makes me think of the Master's Word, as found in Verses 37-39 of the 23rd chapter of Matthew: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. For I say unto you. Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.”

It seems to me that those words have tremendous significance in relationship to all of this, because we could just as easily word it this way: “O people of the world, all ye people of the world, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. For I say unto you. Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.” So, until the people of the world accept the instruction and direction of those who truly come in the Name of the Lord, the house of the world must be desolate, in the sense of the sufferings and sorrows, in the sense of death and destruction that comes. Until human beings are ready to say, “Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord”, so that the Word of the Lord is accepted, and the direction of the Lord is followed, how can there be fulfilment?

I might mention, apropos of all of this, that in this world at the present time, when a nation accepts hate as its motivating impulse, in the face of what we recognize in a consideration of the words just expressed, we see that something is going to happen. When a nation dedicates itself to hate, and sows the seeds of hate and suspicion and dissension and conflict, functioning in a current of heedless greed, on a basis of arrogant and deliberate hypocrisy, we know that something is going to happen.

I just mention that in recognition of the fact that changes come, and I mention it to emphasize the fact of our responsibility as Emissaries, that we live in a complete dedication to the One Law, which is the Law of Love, and that we so function that the Unit that is already a reality may become so blended in the Fire that it shall be an effective Nucleus in the release of the Power of God on earth. We have no time to waste, no time for dilly-dallying. We recognize this Law as it applies to the world — that progress comes. So, also, for ourselves, and if we do not let that progress come the easy way, under easy circumstances, so that we may function effectively when times of pressure come, then, most assuredly, we will have to achieve the Goal of true Unity, effectiveness as a Nucleus, under conditions that are not so pleasant, because, even at this level, it is possible for human beings to take the hard way — and it need not be! Let us remember the truth of the Word spoken by our KING when He was on earth, “For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Honor The Heavenly Father

from

Honor  The  Heavenly  Father

Martin Exeter    August 30, 1987

It is now well over half a century since the Word of the King has been articulated on earth: “Come near unto Me.” When this Word was initially spoken, through Uranda's lips, there was no one. Then came a few. Through these few the initial generation of spiritual substance began to take place. As there was more of this substance available, resonating with the radiance of the Word, more began to be drawn close. Through the generation of spiritual substance greater radiation occurs. So, gradually a body of human beings has come together for the purpose of generating more spiritual substance — this in order that there might be a larger and intensified radiation. Wherever there is resonant substance in human beings, that substance is drawn. If there is enough of it in a person the person him- or herself comes along; and because human beings are somewhat arrogant, the assumption is “I chose to come.” But the fact of the matter is quite different. Radiation, response, attraction — that is the initial aspect of the process.

Sometimes those who are drawn because there was some substance in themselves which resonated with the radiation decide to cut out. If they do, that internal substance recedes, and may indeed vanish away. Where there is resonant substance, and a human being comes along, there may be additional generation, so that there is a sharing in providing spiritual substance within the developing collective body which is charged with the responsibility of allowing this to happen. One might say that the process is foolproof, which is fortunate, because most of us have been in that classification! It works. Whether anyone likes it or not, whether anyone agrees with it or not, it works; and as I mentioned, it has been working over the last half century. It is quite possible for human beings to hold out their resonant substance, to keep it at arm's length so to speak; and this has been done by everyone along the way. In these days there are more who are aware of their real responsibility, and so are allowing what they have considered to be their own personal resonant substance to be given to the One to whom it belongs. We speak of that One as the King, for sake of identification.

This resonant substance in the hands of the King composes what might be referred to as the silver cord for the body of mankind. We have all been acquainted with the words “silver cord,” as presented in the Book of Ecclesiastes. There the reference has been seen primarily as relating to the individual: “Or ever the silver cord be loosed.” When it is loosed, that human form is dead. Obviously there has been a silver cord present with respect to the body of humanity, or the body of humanity would have long since been dead. So it isn't a matter of weaving a silver cord — it is already in place — but of generating the finer substance that would make it possible for that silver cord to carry the true essences of the spirit of the King. Heretofore it has been pretty coarse. We can see evidences of that on every hand in the behavior of human beings the world around. It has all been pretty coarse, coarse and destructive, violent, corrupt. So there is obviously a need for finer substance to be included in the already existing silver cord, by reason of which mankind has continued thus far on the surface of the earth.

We might give another name to the silver cord. All these words are symbols, anyway, of a reality. But the silver cord, as it relates to the body of mankind, rather than merely to the individual, was indicated as “the river of life,” the river of life which flows in the midst of the street of the holy city, and on either side of which grows the tree of life. As we have assumed responsibility, in our own individual living, for the generation of spiritual substance because our lives are given back, to whatever extent, to the One to whom they belong, then there is a collective flow of the river of life central to the consciousness of this forming spiritual body. And because there is that flow, and the flow is allowed to continue and increase, the tree of life begins to take form once again. The tree of life ultimately is, in fact, the body of Man, which brings forth leaves and bears fruit for the purposes of the King. Not too many human beings on the face of the earth have been particularly interested in the purposes of the King, because they have been so wrapped up in their own purposes, stealing life which then, of course, must ultimately vanish away. People customarily die, generation after generation, and that is taken for granted. It only occurs because the life has been stolen; and what occurs with respect to human beings is reflected in the environment. There are those these days who are much concerned about the environment. They begin to see the writing on the wall, that the human race cannot much longer exist on the face of this planet at the rate that environmental destruction is occurring. So there is a certain fear, and fear galvanizes people into action. I think there needs to be honesty in this, because very often the assumption is that one acts to preserve the environment because one loves it so much, when the fact of the matter is that fear prevails.

There is a commandment, among the ten, which provides a certain instruction as to the way life works. “Honour thy father and thy mother.” One could paraphrase the commandment a little by saying, “Honor thy heavenly Father and thy earthly Mother, but honor thy heavenly Father first; then you will be able to honor the earthly Mother.” The approach now is from the bottom up, so to speak, so that the first thing that comes to the awareness of people is what has happened to the earthly Mother. There is concern for the earthly environment presently being emphasized, because there is this process by which people are rising up. We ourselves may well know that it isn't a matter, initially, of honoring the earthly Mother. One can have respect for the earthly Mother, but the honoring needs to be of the heavenly Father. Insofar as most people are concerned, they haven't reached that point. A number of people are now running into an awareness of the fact that the earthly Mother has been dishonored. She has been abused and raped. Seeing this, there is a reaction to what is seen: “This shouldn't be. Let's stop it; let's do something about it. Let's begin to honor the earthly Mother.” But nobody yet knows how to do that. All they have is a whole slew of human concepts, of conflicting views, which have nothing to do with honoring the earthly Mother, because the earthly Mother cannot be honored until the heavenly Father is honored. Honor thy heavenly Father and thy earthly Mother, in that order.

Because there are those who are beginning to become aware of the necessity of honoring the earthly Mother, there is indication that people are rising up in consciousness toward the heavenly Father. For the most part they haven't got there yet, and they still put their dependence in the manipulation of the earthly Mother. Our concern is not primarily with the earthly Mother. We respect the earthly Mother, and we provide what we may in the fields where we have direct responsibility in this regard, but we are aware that whatever may be done in that sense is virtually nothing. We know that first is the honoring of the heavenly Father. This has come to focus in our own consciousness as relating to the One to whom all belongs anyway, identified by using the words the King. There is one King. Human beings have separated themselves from any awareness of this fact that they themselves only exist to the extent that they are willing to differentiate the spirit of that one King, having decided to steal their lives and use them for their own human purposes. This is obvious, isn't it? What are you going to do? Honor the heavenly Father — a simple answer. There are plenty of people grappling with problems. It hasn't got anyone anywhere so far, so why pour our life energy into the same process?

Why not allow our life energy to be restored to the King, to whom it belongs in the first place? I suppose you could say that it is self-interest to do it, because if you don't do that you are going to lose it anyway. So, seeing these things, and being slightly more intelligent than we were in days gone by, we have exhibited at least some willingness to accept the King, to accept the quality of the spirit of the King into our own living. That is the only place we can know it. We accept it individually, ourselves, into our own living, or we reject it — one or the other. It is a very simple choice, really. Of course there is something that goes beyond that, and that is the extent of resonant substance that there may be present within ourselves. But that resonant substance can increase. It increases in direct proportion to the extent that our lives are returned to the King. Then there is radiation, and the radiation generates additional substance, and additional substance permits greater radiation. It is a very rapid process for those who are willing to let it be an exponential experience. It can easily be. Most of us have existed so far with the brakes on. The generation of substance is of primary importance, so there may be this radiation of spirit as life is returned to the King. Then the King may have a body and live on earth. Very simple. Everything works in very natural ways. Because we have physical forms we are capable of living on earth. If He has a physical form He is capable of living on earth. Simple. But He has no form in which to live on earth as long as human beings are busy about their own business, what they conceive to be important to them. It is true enough that we all have things to do. After all, we landed up here on earth and we have developed whatever we have developed so far, doing what we're doing. That may be useful for the moment. But we don't do it because we are identified with some profession or other; most people are. We have all been given the name of the Lord. Every human being on the face of the earth has been given the name of the Lord. Each of us can say quite easily, “I am.” And that is the name of the Lord. But virtually everyone has taken it in vain.

We are here ourselves now because we have begun to honor the heavenly Father. The King is supreme. His life is everything. It is my life. When we can say that and it is so, we are present on earth to provide what is necessary for the creative action of the King. The point is: What is actually the fact with respect to oneself? That is the only thing that is of concern. Is one's own life a differentiation in expression on earth of the life of the King? We have begun to be aware of this to the extent that we are in position because there is sufficient substance to accommodate the life of the King. Then, looking round about, we see that the King governs. It is all under control. No one has been able to take it out of the spiritual control pattern which is present throughout the whole universe. That would be quite a trick, wouldn't it, if these little puny creatures here on the surface of the earth could take themselves and everything else here on earth permanently out of the creative process which informs the whole universe and have a little, what, a little cyst sitting to one side of the universe? “This is ours now. We've finally triumphed, claiming complete authority in our own field of operations. We've defeated the King — perhaps not in the rest of the universe, but right here!” That is the most ridiculous idea that could come to the consciousness of human beings. It is a sad, sad thing insofar as the havoc that has been wreaked in this beautiful creation, this beautiful planet, is concerned. Human beings claim that it is still very beautiful, but it doesn't reveal any more of what the real beauty should be than a dried raisin reveals what a grape is.

Again, honor the King. Honor the heavenly Father. Honor the King. The only way one can honor the King is by accepting the King's life into one's own expression of living. It is the only way. Otherwise one is denying the King, and it is because of this that the King has been excluded from His world. It is fortunate that the primary quality of the King is love. If it hadn't been that, I think He would have squashed human beings under His thumb long ago. How thankful one may be to awaken to the truth of these things and to participate in the continuing generation of substance by which the radiation of the King may shine forth into all the world. That is a fire, and it is hell to those who resist it. There is need for honor of the heavenly Father — not lip service, not bowing humbly in some sort of a supposedly sacred setting, probably once a week, but letting the life of the King be one's own life, because one has no life anymore of one's own. One will do nothing for oneself in the sense of trying to promote the human ego and personality. There is only one way. There is only one life, and unless you accommodate that one life you don't have it. So we share in this angelic business of unveiling the angel in human form on earth because the angel reveals the life of the King, and this is available to anyone. The human state takes a little shucking off, but it never happens until one is willing to let it be shucked off. We may relinquish it and know life, the life of the King, because we honor the heavenly Father.

Honoring the heavenly Father we then are quite capable of permitting the creative action of the King to come into effect with respect to the earthly Mother. There is no human being who can figure out what should happen to the earthly Mother. Things finally got to the stage where it is hopeless. We may be very thankful for that. It is hopeless; it's useless to try to fix it up. And while we may play some part in alleviating the difficulties that human beings accept for themselves, at the same time our main concern is the will of the King: How can whatever I am doing be used to advantage? Not for me.

There is something coming called Apocalypse, which is a wonderful thing. It is a revelation, a revelation of the truth. Everybody is going to be faced with the truth. Let us face the truth before that moment comes for everybody on the face of the earth, because there need to be those who are present to provide a focus of stability and radiance, which allows all things to work together to perfection. That is the responsibility of those who awaken to it. I rejoice that there are those who are awakening and those who are accepting the King, His life, His purpose, His will as being their own life and purpose and will. And so that provides what is necessary for the King at this point. There is far more to be provided, but let us accept what may be done now, because we honor Him, and honoring Him we honor the earthly Mother.

All The World Loves A Lover

All  The  World  Loves  A  Lover

from  Giving  Form  to  the  One  Law

Uranda   October 4, 1945

In relationship to the One Law, in spite of what I have said about it and written about it previously, I find that one of the greatest stumbling points is in connection with its application to men and women. It is recognized that in the properly balanced and effective function of humanity, man represents the positive pole and woman represents the negative pole of life expression. That fact, intellectually perceived, tends to create difficulties if the realization does not carry over into an understanding of practical function. There is an old saying that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and it is true. When we stop to think about it, the One Law, being the basic Law, has to do with all the forces of the Cosmos. Ignorance which causes the individual to function contrary to the correct way in relationship to the One Law produces dire results.

We recognize, for instance, that in the relationship of man and the Father within, failure to harmonize properly with the One Law from the standpoint of the mass of humanity is the basic cause of death, and we recognize that the secret of eternal life and of expression in this sphere of creation rests within that One Law. We recognize that this Law is the means by which the solar system is held together, and it is the means by which solar systems are coordinated in universes, and it is the means by which the tiny atom maintains its stability. The power of the atomic bomb as a destructive force springs from the One Law, because in that fringe of manifestation between the formed and the unformed, man has been able to disturb the stability of certain atoms and the oft-repeated statement that two positives repel each other is given vivid evidence in the extreme destructive nature of the atomic bomb.

All of this is in a sense abstract, but these abstract facts must be borne in mind if we are going to have a clear understanding of the One Law in relationship to human beings. The living of life here and now is the important thing to each one of us. The means by which we can experience the fulness of life here and now is found to be bound up in the One Law. Appeal to the human consciousness, from the standpoint of story and experience, finds expression in what we call romance. Another old saying which is true is that all the world loves a lover. Usually that statement is thought of only in relationship to the lovesick swain who calls on his lady fair, and it seems to be commonly accepted that shortly after marriage the function of the lover comes to an end. It is rarely that we find individuals who have been married for a long period of time who still maintain the lover's attitude.

From the standpoint of the Third Sacred School we see at once that the statement, “All the world loves a lover,” can have a very broad application in truth. We recognize that the individual who expresses love in the Divine sense of the word is the individual who receives love in return. I am not talking about the ordinary human limitations of concept only, in relationship to the word “love”. Love is one of the most abused words in the English language. It is perhaps the least understood, and next to the name of Deity Himself, it is perhaps more widely profaned than any other word. The thoughtless, heedless, sacrilegious way in which the word is used is partially the result of the inadequacy of the English language. We may say that we love a baked potato when we mean that we are very fond of baked potatoes; and then we say that we are fond of individuals when actually we love them, so there you are. The expression of love is the basic expression of life itself. Love has a peculiarly Divine Nature which permits it to permeate all phases of life if we but let it be so. To the degree that individuals fail to let love permeate themselves and all their thoughts, words and deeds, they function outside of the realm of the Divine. The expression of the Divine into the earth takes place through those channels which are permeated with love, and only those responsive forms in the world which permit themselves to be impregnated with love which is expressed from the Divine Realm can be drawn into that heavenly state that we speak of as the Christ Kingdom on earth.

These fundamental facts must be recognized in relationship to the One Law if we are going to understand its application to human beings. First we might take a theoretical example. Suppose there is a man in the Third Sacred School who imagines that he knows something about the One Law when actually about all he has is an intellectual concept of what he thinks it to be. From the standpoint of his individual function, then, he has the idea that, being a man, he is supposed to be positive, but since he is not attuned to the One Law and its natural function his effort to be positive manifests as an arbitrarily established shell — patterned after his concept of what he thinks it is like for a man to be positive. This shell from which he seeks to function contains within itself no life. It does not carry the effectiveness of radiation and consequently it does not naturally draw unto itself a response from any given negative point within the radius of its influence. Because there is no true positive expression there is no true negative expression. Then because this hypothetical man imagines that he is being positive, and because he does not feel or receive the negative response which he anticipates from his positive expression, he assumes that the trouble rests with the negative, which he feels should respond.

We shall perhaps consider the limitations of the negative pole at another time, and I am not suggesting that no improvement is possible in that realm, but regardless of what improvement is necessary in that realm, men cannot arbitrarily expect it to appear until they themselves function properly in the positive sense. Now let us note that in this hypothetical case the man thinks he knows what the Law of the positive and negative is. He thinks he understands it; he thinks he is positive and therefore he thinks that he is doing his part and that there should be a negative return. In this theoretical instance at least, we have a state where the individual is not positive but is in fact negative to an illusion created within his own mind. He is subject to that illusion and responsive to it, so that there is no positive expression of radiation; and what I spoke of a moment ago as a shell is what we might call a front, or an appearance of something that is supposed to be the real thing but is in fact nothing but a hopeless imitation.

This imitation or front may seem, when viewed in certain lights or when seen by persons of little perception, to be the real thing, just as the front on a movie set, when photographed from the right angle, appears to be the real thing. What may look like a beautiful house is just a front held in place by braces; it could not stand by itself. It has no use except its appearance; it is something that could not possibly be lived in. And that is the trouble with this imitation state — it cannot be lived in. Therefore we have to recognize that a man who is seeking to be a good Emissary and who desires to function according to the One Law must first go back, or down, as the case may be, to the point of his actual expression of positive radiation, even if it is, comparatively speaking, nothing more than a pin point in actuality. That is where he has to start, because it is absolutely impossible to succeed or to be effective on the basis of the empty form or shell.

When the expression of the so-called positive nature is something engendered on the basis of a human expression, the human will or human desire, it has precious little force; and if it springs from selfishness or a failure to be considerate or to have understanding of the basic factors involved in any given situation, its manifestation produces discord. Therefore in this we have evidence of the fact that whatever is humanly engendered in the so-called positive expression tends to destroy rather than to build, while that positive expression which springs from the Divine is constructive in its nature. Sometimes it may have to be firm, sometimes it may have to destroy an unreal form, but that type of activity is not properly in evidence until the individual has functioned so effectively in relationship to the One Law that he has gravitated naturally to a place of responsibility and authority.

One of the great pitfalls confronting those who seek to function from the standpoint of the positive without having achieved coordination in the One Law is that they attempt to assume an air of authority, or they attempt to participate in what we might call a realm of privilege in which they are not properly authorized to function. The authority or privilege that comes to an individual through a natural expression in true harmony with the One Law cannot be just arbitrarily assumed by some individual because he thinks he knows the One Law and undertakes to function according to an arbitrary form of expression. We have here all the difference that there is between the real and the unreal, and the results of its expression are the difference between life and death.

What, then, is the practical solution in our hypothetical case? If we analyze it we shall probably find that the individual has, in an effort to overcome something of an inferiority complex, developed what we might call a defense mechanism, and in its manifestation he feels that he has something that he can use as a buffer between himself and life. In such a case as we are considering, in its theoretical aspects, the individual would be more or less inclined to avoid looking frankly and clearly at himself. He knows that he would not like what he would see, therefore he tries not to see it. As we move along the Central Way toward reality, we find that sooner or later the aspiring one reaches a point where he has to be able to take a good long look at himself and see himself as he is, unashamed before the Lord, with all the defense mechanisms and all false concepts swept away and with no more illusions left. The individual in such a case, then, should not feel that letting go of the fronts is any reflection upon himself, because a counterfeit is of no value anyway. Such an individual deludes no one but himself, at least not for very long. He needs to be willing to let the counterfeits fall away. In such a case he would have a feeling, at first at least, that his positive expression, so called, was gone — and probably it would be, but he would have lost nothing. It needs to go, because unless the positive expression springs from the Divine it is of no value. The individual would feel weak; he would probably have as one of his first reactions an overwhelming sense of futility. But if he were willing and able to face these facts and hold steady in the face of that sense of futility, he would naturally take a very fundamental step.

From the standpoint of religion as it has been generally known, one of the prerequisites of the usual concept of salvation is repentance. All of these religious concepts contain fundamental principles of reality which are inadequately understood. Repentance is, properly, an acknowledgment of the true state of the individual and a frank, direct indication that he is willing to let his life be redirected according to a new pattern. He is not expected to mature in the expression of that new pattern overnight. He is expected, rather, to come as a little child, wherein he can let the expression of that pattern grow and develop, that he may in due season come to experience true positive expression in reality.

A great deal of the difficulty that we have run into in the Third Sacred School in relationship to men has been on this point, but the only thing that you can get out of a shell is the mockery of a hollow echo. I have repeatedly emphasized in the Third Sacred School, and have consistently exemplified the fact, that the spirit of the form is more important than the form, and if the spirit of the form does not permeate the form it is useless. That fact is just as true in relationship to our consideration tonight as to any other point of reality. It is only as men permit themselves to be attuned to the One Law, so that there is a natural expression of positive radiation through them into the world, that they themselves can begin to find themselves. And in such function they are drawn gradually into their own true polarity, the point from which they can successfully and effectively function. It is only then that they can properly hope for the fulness of negative response for which there is a natural longing.

As we move forward along the way toward that goal it is fortunate that there are women in the School who recognize that they themselves have not reached the fulness of the correct function in relationship to the One Law, and who are therefore willing to serve in their appointed places, according to the principles of reality, in correct harmonizations with men who have not found the fulness of positive expression in reality; and in such a case the two can move forward together to the goal. I said they can move forward to the goal, but in that moving there are many hazards. If for a moment either one forgets the facts as they are and tries to function in human strength, from a human standpoint, the destructive nature of the One Law begins to appear, because if they meet on the human level in positive expression toward one another, two positives repel each other.

It is only when a positive is Divinely Positive that he has a right to stand unyielding, and even in that case he will yield as far and as much as he can without violating reality. Such an individual never makes an issue of his own whims and fancies. Such an individual is careful to let the spirit of the Christ Love so permeate his thoughts, words and deeds that he is an expression of the Divine in the earth.
